Was looking for an upgrade for the type set and picked this one up for a descent price . Is this a die clash on the reverse?

Yes I agree with die clash. If you enlarge the obverse pic, on the right side of the top hair braid you can see a couple letters from E Pluribus Unum. An overlay would be nice...

I wish I knew how to do the overlay pics. If anyone could help it would be appreciated.

And how many of those views can't say for sure based off the pictures? Would you really truly want 1797 - I don't know's. :) I am not sure it is a die clash, but have no clue as to what it is.

I do appreciate it Mark. I'm sure that after that many views there would be at least a glimmer of answer. That is not a negative in any way towards the posters up to this point, but with all the experience on here I thought I might receive a little more help towards this coin.

Just curious, do you collect fish as well? I'm into discus........they go with coins w/ their shape.

Your 3rd pic down is a bit weak looking. You even took a close-up of the E Pluribus Unum area. Does it look like it has extra nickel in that area?

The nickel looks weak not you pic. :D

I'm not sure that I would say extra nickel, with the exception of the "line". It is not like a cud in any way if that is what you mean by extra.

I bought a counterfeit 1913 T-1 and I am highly suspect when I see those suckers!! I noticed that you took a close-up Pluribus area and on that counterfeit I bought that was the same area which was a give away that's all. Don't mind me, I'm always suspect of buffalo nickels since buying that dam fake!!

That has got to be die clash marks. I overlaid the obverse on the reverse. The marks you point out align perfectly with the chin. I also found that there are some marks left from the feathers also. It is kind of hard to see especially because the clash appears to have been slightly offset. I am not to sure how much you can make out. I turned the obverse red to make it stand out more.
