I have a 1921 D morgan dollar with VAM 1X .It also has a large die crack on the reverse starting from the k10 to k12through the eagles right wing tip going under the S and through the T and A then above the second T up to the dentile. It caused a small cud where it touches the T. Should I have something like this slabbed? Is this a valuable error? It's grade looks to be somewhere in the MS 55-MC58. Thanks
Can you post pictures of it? VAM 1X is very rare (VAMworld has only 1 known listed). For it to be a 1X it should look like the example here: VAMworld - 1921-D VAM-1X
Also, from your reverse description it sounds like VAM 1R (VAMworld - 1921-D VAM-1R) might match. VAM 1X would be very easy to spot, there is a huge cud on the obverse (as shown in the VAMworld pictures.
mine does not have the large cud like your picture. It has a large die crack there and at the bottom of the obverse and a very large die crack on the reverse with a tiny cud above the T. Thanks for the reply. It's my first time using Coin Talk.I'm not sure how to send pictures. Thanks again. This is a great way to communicate!!
Ok, then 1X would be out. Does your coin match VAM 1R (VAMworld - 1921-D VAM-1R)? Here's a link on how to upload pics: How To Post (Upload) Photos - CoinTalk You can also upload pics to a image hosting site like Photobucket, and then link the pics from there. Btw, Welcome to the forum!
That's exactly what my coin looks like!!I have a cherrypickers' guide 4th edition volume II but it doesn't have that VAM variety. Can you recommend a book that would be helpful ? Thanks again !!
The best book out there for VAMs is The Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace Dollars by Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis. *The lowest price I've seen is on eBay, for around $55. Also VAMworld is a great site that list all the known VAMs. Here's a link to their VAM listings page: VAMworld And here is some info on VAMs in general: VAMworld - VAM
You should be aware that it has been about 20 years since the 4th edition of the book was published. At that time, there were about 1,800 Morgan and Peace dollar varieties. Now, there are more than 4,000. If you purchased the book, you would need to order the annual updates from Leroy Van Allen, and that would cost you about $200 additional. An alternative would be to use the listings on the VAMWorld site. This site originated under the auspices of the Society of Silver Dollar Collectors (SSDC) with expressed permission from Leroy Van Allen to use his attributions and microphotographic plates. Chris
