I'd search them anyway. Somtimes I search rolls that have been searched and marked and still find silver.

I have to agree with Noost. Sometimes, a 40%er that is well circulated will look like a clad from the edge and you don't know it is silver until you look at the coin. I think some searchers only look at the edge as I have found a few that way from searched rolls.

    That's a great dime - 1593. What mint?

no, but I think they were crimped using one of those crimper things.

I'd be better off checking rolls that I know haven't been searched, no? I'll come back to those when I exhaust the local supply.

    Personal Best Find!!!!! Yeah baby!

I really have cut way down on roll searching. I was getting 7-8 boxes a week and making bank runs on Saturday's but I have scaled WAY back. Now I get 2-3 boxes a week and rely on my teller network instead of going on bank runs.

Last night I found an estate sale about 45 minutes from my house that had a lot of collectibles. My kids did not have any games today so I decided to get up early and go to the estate sale. Estate sale summary: TONS of collectibles, first guy bought all the train stuff (entire truck load), second guy bought a bookcase FULL of stamps and stamp binders from all over the world and so on. Alas, no coins. I did buy an early edition of "Risk" and one of "Stratego" that are in their original unopened boxes for a couple of bucks each.

So before I head back home I decide to stop by a bank. 8:50 am so lobby was not open. Go through the drive through. Teller says we have some you want $40. I said sure, get them, and drive away. At the light open a roll and find a 1964 and 1968. Second roll, 1964, 1968, 1967. Hmmm 3rd roll 1949, 1968. Needless to say I made a u-turn and went back. Teller says I have about $300 more. As she puts them on the counter, I notice years on most of them 1980, 1979, 1972, 1976 and so on and none of them had the account number to match the first 4. Alas...

Turn to walk away, they hollar at me and say the other teller has $50 if I want them...The account matches and my spirits renewed. In the 9 rolls find 1 walker, 1 Franklin, 4 1964 and 16 40%. Awww a good day.

But wait, I start opening the "dated" rolls as I drive. All acurately marked and no silver but the last 4 of them are unmarked. (Mind you I never found a full roll of silver before) 1st roll is all silver! I put them away without looking at any of them for my kids to open when I get home....

Final Tally to the delight of my kids:

    1927 (1)
    1940 (1)
    1941 (2)
    1942 (1)
    1943 (2)
    1944 (1)
    1945 (2)

    1949 (1)
    1952 (1)
    1954 (1)
    1958 (1)
    1963 (1)

    1964 (11)
    1966 (20)
    1967 (28)
    1968 (19)
    1969 (8)

    And one perfect 1969 proof.

All total 10 Walkers, 5 Franklins, 11 1964's, and 76 40%er's. All in less than 10 minutes and by far my best single find!!!!!!!!!!! We RARELY find Walkers and Franklins in this area.

Oh, and if you are paying close attention, you might notice 1965 in missing so I am wondering if they overlooked a roll in the vault because this guy had them all neatly sorted and rolled. I will be going back Monday....

Have a great day and good luck out there!!

Not really a roll find, but interesting anyway. When we were kids (maybe 10-12) my friend asked the ice cream man if he had any half dollars or dollar coins. He pulls out a coin and says "just this" It was a proof ike dollar looks like someone just pulled it out of a set to buy an ice cream LOL.

I am not sure which part of that is the strangest one. The fact my friend got a proof ike dollar from the ice cream man, or the part where the ice cream man actually gave it to him for a dollar? I am still good friends with him I gotta ask him what the date was. This was like 17yrs ago or so.

    Oregon half dollar percentages

I've been finding around 2 % silver in bags of half dollars - counting Walkers, Franklins, 90% Kennedy, and 40% Kennedys. Curious whether there is a geographical bias.

From what i have heard, I think it is better in the northwest than back East or in the south.

    Find

Thanks gang. I will get the rest of the rolls (Pretty sure there were a few more but not sure if any silver) and try to post pics of the find for all to see.

Oh, I saw someone post something about finding 2% silver overall. My experience here in the Houston area is less than 1%. Just FYI

Was searching through a few rolls of Canadian coins and found a 1927 and 1935 Canadian nickle, searched a roll of pennies and found a 1934 Canadian penny. Not as old as i hoped but not bad .. Rick

Very nice Erin!!!!!! I made the same kind of find about 6 months ago and I was about as high as I could be without being on some type of controlled substance. Anyway Searched a box of customer rolled pennys this weekend found a bunch of shields and 3 solid rolls of canadian pennys. :thumb:

    Congrats Erin and Bob.

Searched $150 in customer rolled halfs and got a 1964 and 1966. Not bad considering my luck lately. Also got a well-traveled 1920 wheatie in change today.

At a tollbooth the other day, I was ready to throw in a handful of change, when I noticed a rather dark dime. I pulled it out to be safe, and put it back in my pocket. The next day I remembered the dime and checked my change. Turned out to be a 1963 D. Glad I kept it, I almost paid way too much for that 80 cent toll ! :D
