OK I'm just getting into roll searching for silver, so I apologize if these are dumb questions, but when you buy rolls (in this case, of halves) for searching, are there any criteria you try and have the bank meet? (i.e. been around since before 1964, Bank of America, etc?) Also, is it better to ask for 'the oldest rolls you have' or for circulated rolls? Again I apologize if these are dumb questions, but any help is appreciated.
Just buy whatever rolls they have if any. There is no one bank that is better for finding halves. goodluck.
I find that the age of the bank doesn't really matter, however location is key. A lot of people have luck with rural town banks that are not chains. Most of the chain banks order their dimes from Brinks or Loomis. All of my banks get their rolls from Brinks. I hit up one bank that's been around since the 1920s and has a lot of older folks that (70-80s) go in, no real luck there (unless someone beat me to the punch). It seems to be luck in what you find. You'll hear about people who go through a dozen boxes of halves without getting a single 40% or 90% coin. Most of my banks don't have older rolls. They'll have customer rolls sometimes, but for all I know that could be another roll searcher returned set of rolls. I just ask for whatever they have and usually buy a box at a time. Some banks let you order boxes for free! Just remember not to return your rolls to the same bank you bought them from Happy hunting!
First of all, the only dumb question is the one not asked. Second, take any roll you can get and start searching. Hope you have some good luck
Good luck to you and welcome to the addiction of roll searching !! Let us know if you find anything good Pat
I go to all the smaller town banks and have no problem getting wheats but the halves are getting harder to get with any silver in them. I found 2 walkers in a roll a few weeks ago that was wrapped at home by someone. Those type of public wrapped rolls are usualy where I find silver if any.
BoA uses their own regional storage facilities to provide change for their branches, so it is very possible that you can end up searching the same coins in 6-12 months, depending how how often you order them from your branch. Try to find small banks or credit unions that order directly from the Federal Reserve in your region. You'll find that widens the area of circulation. Some credit unions also have change counting machines which are free for account holders, so if you don't like rewrapping the coins, it might be a good idea to open a small account with one of them. You should be aware that most have a minimum balance requirement, and you could have monthly service charges if your balance falls below the minimum. I don't mind rewrapping the coins. I've been banking at the same BoA branch for 25 years, and they provide me with thousands of wrappers for each denomination free of charge. I don't even have to put my name or account number on each roll, and they don't bother to check each roll for accuracy. Get to know the tellers at your bank! Whenever someone brings in a deposit of old looking rolls or any that have older dates written on them, they will call me and set them aside until I can get to the bank. Chris
It's all about luck. A friendly teller is your best bet at beating the odds. I have had better luck at smaller banks. My best scores have come from banks on military installations, don't ask me why but it just seems to work that way.
It always best if you find a full Bu roll of Half to keep them in the wrapper you found them in.good luck!!!:thumb:

I live in a small town where I am the only roll searcher so my pickings are fairly good... the only disadvantage is that there is no half dollar to be found.
I live on a small island in the South Pacific. I got to thinking about roll rearching here as coins / paper dollars rarely leave the island. My girlfriend teaches school, so she had to find somethng to do this summer. I gave her a few hundred dollars and told her to hit up the banks on island. In a few days we have gotten plenty of 40% Kennedys.... The whole roll of Franklins + assorted others. 2 40% Ikes.... Don't know how they got there. A few walking libertys. I think that she is now a confirmed roll searcher. I guess we will start with quarters next.
That describes my situation exactly. I've run all the banks in town completely dry of halves so I'm going to have to resort to ordering boxes. On the plus side, though, in a few months I can start all over calling all of the banks in town and know that it is extremely likely that if they have any, I haven't gone through them.
Yep, plus and minus situation... no halves which are big silver but really good because nobody hits the place up... the bank gave me for FREE a dime with a die crack that I sold for $50. so they care. I have never gotten a silver half ever tho
