I just got this coin the other day and noticed it had a fairly large crack in it. It shows through both sides and I'm wondering if it's an error or some how over the years just split. It's an 1866 3 cent (nickle) in good condition. If it is an error what type is it and how much might it be worth? Should I get it slabbed? Thanks for any help
Looks like a split planchet to me. There are error collectors who would pay a nice premium for it, how much I don't know. As far as having it graded, I wouldn't because of the low grade. If it were AU or better it may be worth the price...
Actually, I believe that would be refered to as a cracked planchet rather than a split planchet which would mean that the planchet peeled in layers. Richard
You are absolutely right, I stand corrected. I noticed my error after I entered it in, but I'm not sure how to use my edit button. I almost crashed my computer once now I'm leary about trying new things...
