Yeah it does look alot like it, Im taking it to a dealer on Monday to see what thinks, Ill post back here what he says.
Here is a regular 1914 cent if that helps This is a scan of a beat up old 1914-P out of my folder if that helps at all with the date comparison.
I got one like that, but I was too embarrassed to post it. LOL Everyone here has such great coins ! My best ones are pretty sad.
How about someone bought it as real, found out it was fake and just dumped it in with the other cents.
That was my thought. Can't sell it or put it on display, so dump it in the sorter ? I came across a 1948 that had been ground down to look like a 1943. It looks like someone tested it with a pocket knife to see if it was steel. Damaged with 3 penetrations. Don't know why they didn't use a magnet ?
Yeah, I did something similar to what RLM was doing by copying the other 4 and placing it over the 1, and here is what I crudely came up with... -LTB
But then I did the same thing with the known 1914 D and came up with this... I would just wait until Monday to find out for sure -LTB
someone's failed attempt When I first found this cent tonight I thought WOW a real 1914-D. I then proceeded to commit the 1st sin of coin collecting and washed most of the thick black questionable material off of it , just to discover this was someone's obvious "failed" attempt at altering a 1944-D.
Some of the VDB still showing. You can see the scratch marks where they tried to remove them. It is a nice example of a failed attempt...
Did you line up the verticals? BTW, I went back and tried it again after enlarging the date a bit. I suspect what I said before is correct, but there is enough fuzz around those numbers that I cannot tell for sure.
Someone knew it was fake and tossed in the roll hoping you'd exclaim that you got a 14-D in their feedback. :headbang:
So Ive been trying to take better pictures of the date, so far this is the best ive gotten. Quality isnt that great, guess ima have to invest in a better macro camera soon. Here it is, if you look close you can see the back curve of the 9 coming out over the top of the D mint mark and the gap doesnt appear as large. I think because of the wear on the date its gonna make this hard for anyone to authenticate. But I see no way a 4 could fit where the "1" is. Anywho, wish monday could get here so I could find out either way.
