It is coins like this that help explain my love for toning. I dare you to find another toned washington that looks like that. GW has a mustache for Pete's sake. Gorgeous and original. Now if Mike would stop teasing us and post the reverse we could all sleep happy tonight.

Oh you are such a tease. I expected a plain white reverse and then you show us that absolute work of art. What an incredible coin and I am officially awarding a "you suck" award to Mike. I have a feeling I already know the answer to this question but how easy is it to find rainbow toned 1948-D Washington Quarters?

I really have no idea how hard this issue is to find with color. I'm a type guy when it comes to these coins, not a specialist, but these coins certainly don't grow on trees.

IIRC, this was one of LeeG's coins, and was once owned by TomB. Not 100% sure -- going from admittedly faulty memory. Perhaps Tom will see the coin and comment.

It looks like TomB quality to me and Leeg will buy anything that pretty. Is it an MS66* or MS67*?

It's in an NGC MS66* holder and I owned it for many years. At one time I helped LeeG with his type set and sent to him perhaps four of my toned WQs for him to pick his favorite. He chose this 1948-D and then I was stunned when a relatively short while later he sold the coin.

I can post my Washington from Page 14 again :p

Or I can post the other quarter from the set, the Christmas Quarter.

In fact, I think I will.

I've seen some Franklin's that crusty and beautiful, but I'm sure I haven't seen a Washington. An absolute gorgeously toned monster.

Don't get me wrong, that is an incredible coin and I find the toning stunning. However, the date is 1958-D. The double mint set toners from 1957 & 1958 are so common that finding coins with the type of color your coin exhibits is rather easy. The colors and originality of the toning pattern on Leadfoot's Washington simply can't be duplicated. But if you ask me to find a Washie like yours my reply would be:

I still love your coin though and the Franklin as well.

You guys are killing me with the WQ images. I've tried to refrain from posting them, but here is one that is pretty unusual-

    Tom,

He does that! I don't know why, but I am glad he does. I got this Antietam from him. I don't know where he got it but it is CRO's archives.

It was desperate to satiate my appetite for one of these after letting the Anaconda coin slip through my fingers.

It still pains me when I look at that photo.

Not quite as crusty as the !948 or Tom's '47-D, but does have some meat on it.

    Thanks.

And you're right; I didn't actually pay attention to the date on Leadfoots, lol.
but yes, finding a stunning toner that was NOT from the 57 and 58 mint sets would be harder.

And I like that coin you posted, what's the reverse look like? :thumb:

Marauder, is that a proof? It sure looks like it.

but regardless, it's VERY nice! :)

edit: it's also interesting that on the obverse it shares the same alternating bands of red/green as my 58 one.

ah, the luster made me think otherwise.

but it sure is nice :) -- where did you get it? if you don't mind me asking.
