look right under the chin it has a weird what i presume is a cud. I found this in my pocket change. I usually just look at dates, but this one caught my eye and i put it in my "second" look pile. After bringing i loupe to it i found what i saw wrong with it. When did FDR have 2 chins? The only other thing i see on the coin are a hugely defined rim on the front and back. Also the coin seems to be about 1/2 times thicker the entire way around the coin than other dimes. picture of obverse if needed i can get a picture of reverse. The reverse's rim is huge! Could this all be related? for instance to much pressure on the die?
let me show you the reverse why does the details in this coin seem filled and dull? but the wear is all wrong. The lettering is perfect and doesn't have any unexplainable nick anywhere on the coin, but the details on the torch and hair are almost flat? is that part of the error or the weirdest wear ever? btw reverse
looks like this was passed up and never got a response... how much if anything is this worth. I haven't really gotten any answers and i have never seen a modern with so many "odd" aspects. 1 double chin 2thickness of coin 3 rim much higher 4 tiny other marks i noticed could also be attributed to this error. Several little raised dots all over the reverse. 2 are on the left branch and one is on the right 5 lack of details on the coin despite no sign of wear and original mint luster?? now that's a weird one for me
Sorry,At this point,It prob isnt going to be a real bread winner. It is uncommon,or at least I havent seen any.I wouldnt put a big premium on it,due to condition.Maybe a couple bucks.Stuff like that doesnt have a huge demand. Now if you had it certified as an error, then had a magazine publish an article saying it was the only one found, then lopped it on ebay, yeah maybe then you could get some decent money out of it,maybe.I would keep it due to uniqueness factor.
These appear to be "blebs" or "patches", both terms used to refer to pitting of the die that sometimes occurs in late die states. The cause of these die erosion pits is unclear but may be related to decarborization of the die steel.
but it is the condition that worries me. It shows all the classic signs of wear that roosevelts have. Wear on the lines of the torch and lack of details on his hair, but..... The original mint lust is 100% intact. Only very very few little marks that are common with a circulated coin in Ms condition. Could this be like extreme die deteriation to the point where those details were just gone. Clearly the strike is terrible.. but it is not post mint. i can see that in the photos and under even 20x magnifcation. The high points on the coin such as the huge rim it has is clean and so is the top of all the letters. I am thinking of sending it in to ngc to get it certified. Like you said the coin would only be worth a few bucks if that without certification , but seeing how it is so unique.. Never know what some people will pay on ebay. =] I collect error dimes mostly silver ones and this is not the weirdest one i have seen , but I have seen so many dimes the image is burned into my brain. when i just glanced at this coin I immediately picked it out. I'll chalk this up as a good pocket change find =]
Blebs are common and carry no premium. Your dime is worth 10c. Sending it to a grading service would be throwing money away.
die pitting would be all over rather than just localized to the chin area correct? the tiny little pieces raised on the coin are on the back and are only noticeable under 5x. just my thought , but all the problems with this coin such as the rim, lack of finer details from metal flow, the flowing problems at the chin. Couldn't this all be explained by lack of correct die pressure?
If I was that intrigued about it,only if it were mine,I would send it to SEGS.Larry is real good with error stuff,In my opinion. He may only call it "clashed dies" and grade it AUish.but if you really want to have it checked.you always run the risk of not being able to get a return out of it.But as a collector at Heart.its not always about the return.its the thrill of the hunt, the find, and the slab.I always enjoy a coin coming back with attributions. So I say If its really what you want to do,Go for it.its only money, you can always get more, and you have to do what makes You happy.I know what I would do.
it would not be cost effective to counterfeit them. That's like counterfeiting pennys or dollar bills lol. If your gonna do it go big.
