I just bought this coin. I think it's a die #1. Am I right? Was it worth $225 you think? Anyone think it's worth grading? I wonder if PCGS will grade it with the discoloration. Thanks in advance, JasonB
I think it depends upon what the darkness is attributed too. If its something that has corroded the surface, then PCGS will not assign it a grade. If it's just finger toning then yes, they'll grade it.
Me personally, no. Why? Because I am trying to finish my wheat collection (At least A/U or better) and the ones I need are going to be that pricey. I think it's awesome and would love to have but not at that price. -Shrek
Shrek, I couldn't find a 72 DDO Die #1 in any condition under $200. Can you really get an AU one for that. If you wouldn't mind sharing your dealer, I'd love to comparison shop with them. I may be able to send some business their way v/r, JasonB
Jay, Sorry I didnt mean DDO I was referring to normal Lincolns that I am collecting. I should have clarified myself a little better. I will see if I can check a local dealers around my area if you like. PM me with what you are looking for and I will do some searching. Also, just because I thought about you, you can go to www.coppercoins.com and www.lincolncentresource.com and see what they have.
I see that number on PCGS but the ebay sales are higher than the PCGS guide. Shoe, roger on that. I misunderstood. Yes, I love those two sites. Appreciate the links. JasonB
It looks like environmental damage, especially on the fields. It is most likely genuine, but you can check for the die gouge above the "D" in UNITED on the reverse ( see photo at coppercoins). If so, then you might not learn much more from the TPG slab. Most collections are missing it ( or one of the other variety 72DDO there), so it can be a filler or permanent as you decide. Jim
there are some fakies floating around,I would certify it to guarantee its genuine.I think thats a pretty good deal
Thanks, Mad. I'll probably do that. I may just clean it to improve the eye appeal and then certify it with ANACS. they'll give it a details grade which is probably all I can hope for anyway. At least if I strip it, you'll be able to appreciate the doubling a little better. We'll see. I'll update the post if I try it.
Jason, unless you have a lot of positive experience at "cleaning", I would not DO ANYTHING before submission. The odds are you will make it worse, and maybe lessen the overall value more. Check for the markers and you will know if it is genuine. If you are planning on reselling it as a "detail" coin, then grading might help. Jim
Desert, Okay. I have a coin show in the area this weekend, Dulles, VA outside Washington Dc. I may solicit some advice on it at the show.
Sage advice....DO NOT CLEAN! However, you can attempt conservation. Soak in this order: water, acetone, xylene.
Use a good lens and look above the D of UNITED on the reverse, if you see a little 'fingerlike" projection above the D, it is a genuine 1972 DDO Die #1. Don't clean it. If you don't know what stained it, you will take what you paid for the coin and drop the value down to about 50 bucks I hope that helps. Bill
