I was curious if anyone has been collecting the Deadly and Dangerous series from the Perth Mint? the look really great, but have had a heck of a time finding them for sale. any help??? dont want to pay the rediculous prices if i can help it. thanks!
You are always going to pay ridiculous prices for Perth Mint silver... that is why I stay away from it (except for 08/09 kookaburras I bought just to say I have silver from Australia). Why pay $100-$150 for ONE ounce of silver with a pretty picture of a shark or what-have-you, when you can take that money and buy 7 or 8 ounces of silver instead? When the dollar crashes and silver hits $500 (value) an ounce, id rather be holding 7 extra ounces of silver than just 1.
You're going to pay more for them because they are a series, not a bullion coin. They're more like our commemoratives, which sell for comparable prices for the same amount of silver. They're collector coins, not investor coins, which is why il_devo is confused about pricing. Guy~
Thats fine. If you have the money to burn and have to have these coins in your collection to feed your hobby, and they make you feel good, then go for it. But (in my opinion) if you're are buying these both for collector/hobbyist as well as investor purposes, they are a waste of money. Say for a moment that the dollar does indeed crash (its inevitable), and we have to go to a barter system for a period of time. Are people going to give you fair value for these coins in trade? Are they going to care about numismatic values of coins? Probably not. The only thing that matters in these situations is the metal content, whether it be one ounce of silver that cost $150 or $15, they become the same. If in the future you want to cash in the rarity of these coins, you may not be able to.
Hey alll, Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been an avid collector of Perth Mint coins for a few years now and am extremely interested in the Deadly and Dangerous series. Anyway, I came across this thread via the search function and thought there might be a few interested in some news that I came across this afternoon. Downies posted a blog post earlier today with some brief information about what looks like a new release in the D&D series... See here: http://downies.wordpress.com/2010/04/20/whats-next/ They haven't given much away, but it's pretty clear that it looks like we're set for a new coin in the series! Im pretty excited - anyone else with me?
Yeah, I'm with yuh in spirit as my son would absolutely HAVE to own the Octopus and Shark coins. But if it's going to set me back over a hundy; I may be priced out. -LTB
Going by their previous official issue prices, im sure they wont be over a hundred. My guess is around $80... Regardless, have you seen the price the Red Back is going for nowadays? $1k+ easily! Its astounding. Makes me wish I'd purchased more then one way back when! haha
They are cool looking coins and have limited mintages. I thought about them but the premium over silver spot is way too much for me. I collect the Australian Koala series and have had good luck with world bullion at the following site: http://eurocollections.com/ TC
Thanks alot. Everyone here seems so nice Yeh, I've purchased from ECI a few times before too. And you're right, they're really good for world coins. I think they might be affiliated with Downies somehow... Back on topic tho - what are your guesses for the next coin in the D&D series? I was thinking perhaps a jelly-fish, or maybe even a snake?
We won't be going to any barter system, not in our lifetime anyway. If countries like Zimbabwe can still manage to float a currency then the US can. People buy these coins because they like them, not for necessarily practical purposes. Most collectors of anything, china, paintings, art glass, toys, etc, buy for the love of collecting, not because they're hoping to make money somewhere down the track It may be confusing because these items ARE money, but the principle remains the same. Perhaps ther next deadly coin will be a Dingo? A Dingo's got my one ounce! Ok, that was lame :mouth:
Update for Deadly and Dangerous Release And the winner is..... Deadly and Dangerous Series - King Brown Snake http://www.perthmint.com.au/forthcoming-releases.aspx
Awesome! I was right I lold. Although, I cant really see a turkey going down too well in a D&D series... haha. Totally agree with you here, xrayspecs.
According to Downies blog post they'll be available this Sat (May 1st). Best bet is to sign up to their Twitter page as they've said they'll be announcing the minute it's online. I reason that they'll sell fast - the last release sold out in under a week!
Seems even the Perth Mint don't know what they're issuing :mouth: Turns out to be the Eastern Brown Snake not the King Brown. Still a nice looking coin though, better than the Shark and Blue Ring in my opinion. No doubt they won't last long but it sucks they have a one per customer limit...:crying:
