Where is Teddy Roosevelt when you need him!

Teddy Roosevelt was the last U.S. President to DEMAND a beautiful coin. He wanted to combine art, liberty and a deep strike design so that the world would marvel at U.S. coinage. I believe he succeeded! When you talk with our legislative buddies, bring some of Augustus Saint-Gardens masterpieces to remind them what we accomplished almost 100 years earlier!

At the time when Lincoln was proposed for the penny...a huge up roar ensued (especially from Southern states) since he was the first U.S. President on our coinage.

We got over it, but this goes way too far! Harding, Arthur, Hayes? They got to be kidding. Their un-elected wives on PREMIUM coins! We will be a joke to the world. Excuse me as I recover from choking at the thought of Hillary gracing a US coin...oxygen please! Hurry!

PLEASE show him some of the designs from our forum. We need to take the same direction that Teddy Roosevelt insisted. His influence on our coinage is still marveled to this day. I guarantee you will NOT see these coins being sold on late night television in the year 2104 for $19.99 plus S&H of $6.95.

Let history repeat itself because it worked when Teddy "walked tall and carried a big stick".

this sucks. sorry if i have offended but when mr. castle says

"It is important to note, Mr. Speaker, this program would be accepted by the public. In a
    [Page: E333] GPO's PDF
2002 General Accounting Office Report to Congress, it was found 25 percent of respondents would use the dollar coin more for purchases if there was a rotating design similar to the 50 State Quarter Program. Additionally, nearly 50 percent of respondents stated they would collect the new coin if it featured a rotating design. And 69 percent of respondents favored U.S. Presidents as the choice for the new rotating design on the dollar coin."

how come it is that when i get home and look at my change i only find 1 out of 7 quarters that are statehood? every one saves them... if they change to a dollar coin program thats based on the same idea whats going to happen. nobody is going to use them they will hoard them. same thing with the nickels and it will be the same with the coins. how is this going to phase out the dollar bill and hence save money. rediculous i say.

as for the gold. ha i cant afford the ones they make now and i love the design. i couldnt bare to look at say hillary. man this really sucks.

hey nd is they any way you can maybe start a poll here to show the different views to mr. castle or the other reps?

keep up the fight nd and thanx...

Every numismatist should have a portrait of Teddy Roosevelt hanging in his/her office. His vision and efforts are why we enjoy collecting the "golden era" coins of the early 20th century. He is truly worthy of a $1 commem. Thanks, Teddy!! Bully!!

This proves that they're not all locked up. The sad part is that this nutball is not alone, he has co-sponsors. For my part, I'd like to see a dollar coin we will actually use, but not with a person on it, but an image, like Liberty. The only way that will happen is if we quit printing paper dollars. And while we are at it, stop making one cent coins.

Well let me add a few thoughts.

While this idea of Mr. Castle's is not great, he is the only legislator that is attempting serious change. For that, I respect him. He is a nice guy also. His line of thinking is correct. We need change. We want change. He just doesn't know how to do it right. I have taken many coins to the elected leaders, and even some new design ideas such as the one GDJMSP posted. Everyone on capital hill is afraid of not having a president on our coinage. They will not stand up for anything that might discourage a vote. Since the majority of collectors won't call or email their congressmen, our efforts will probably not pay off.
We have to do our part if we want them to do theirs.

Well, they say that three times is the charm....

Who knows, the Pres $ coins may make it, and if they do we might have the momentum to get rid of the pesky buck.

If they do make it into law, we will be forced to keep the Sacagawea. That design will come back at the end of the series.

    Will it become permanent?

There are currently discussions on Capital Hill about making the Cent, Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar designs permanent.

Virginia has led the way with the Jefferson Nickel.

What will we tell our children and grandchildren? Where will coin collecting be in 30 years?

I am not saying I am against coin dollars, But is this going to be for $1, $5, $10, $20 & so on as well. Maybe I missed in a thread. There is times I have had 20-30 $1's and I think that would be much better for carrying than 20-30 coins.

Most people think that we should follow suit with Europe and Canada and not have any bill smaller than $5. Everything smaller would be done in coin. This idea has good merit, as the government would save $500 million a year. Looks good on paper :D

Maybe I was a little hard on Castle, but his idea about the first ladies is absolutely ridiculous. I'd like to back up a bit to refresh my memory. Didn't the Founding Fathers distain the idea of having the image of real people on our coins and currency? I know that thought has fallen by the wayside, but I do remember something along those lines. The 60th anniversary of D-day is drawing near and we are honoring all who participated, not just certain individuals. Coins have had images of Hitler, Saddam, Kings, Queens, etc. Our Presidents were great men, but I just don't think it's right to put them on our coins. We should dust off the old designs and make sensible change. Mr. Castle should make that proposal instead.

The very first law on the books concerning coins, was just that. No presidents on coins. No living persons. An image of Liberty. That was it. Plain and simple. Since 1909 and the Lincoln cent the system has used that created image to fill all the coins with presidents. It wasn't good then, and isn't good now. Sooner or later, we will have a sitting president on a coin.

    Here here

I agree with you...it wasn't good then and it isn't good now!

I am telling you...the thought that Hillary may grace our coinage someday will make me want to quit collecting. I can see it now...why the open slot? Thats where (gulp) Hillary would go...

Have Representative Castle take the politics out of the coin and go with what made US coins the greatest in the world...the combination of liberty, freedom, and the majesty of this great nation!

[Have America the Beautiful playing in the background as you make our argument for the best effect!]

My next meeting is June 14th. This isn't over yet. I now have a couple of senators backing my idea. Can't become law without them ;)

Ronald Reagan and the American Spirit

I am sure Ronald Reagan would want Liberty to grace our coins again. He personafied what America is all about...Life, Liberty, Freedom and the American Spirit!

I am sure we will hear people call for his image on a coin...but I am also sure that Reagan would decline graciously for the very symbols that truly represent America as a whole.

Ronald Reagan (1911 to 2004), our 40th President and in my opinion, the greatest President in the modern era.

Just think, if they issue 500,000,000 proofs. No one will ever spend them into circulation or pay any government bill with them. I bet the Treasury could save at least $450,000,000. Add that to a couple of commemorative stamp issues and we can get the budget balanced.

Was it really necessary to revive an obsolete 6 year-old thread just to make a political comment?

got me there, I do not have any idea how come I got this thread in my in-box, but it seemed that it was active. But then again, I do hear people that no one else does. And sometimes see things hat aren't there while missing completely the things that are. I do apologize to you. And I think this will likely be my last comment here for a while. It's gotten Ho-Hum really quick. LOL

    Again, sorry.
