Actually, I was joking. A few years ago someone bought an old beat up painting at a flea market in the Philadelphia area for about $20, and they found an original copy of the Declaration hidden behind the backing. If I recall, it sold at auction for $2.3 million. Chris
Was it one of those black velvet paintings, like the poker playing dogs?:mouth: I inherited a picture from my grandma. The backing was a piece from a Tom Mix movie poster. It crumbled to dust when I tried to take it out of the frame.:headbang:
I have one of Jesus too, hanging up in my 1970's rec room that's handsomely trimmed with that 1/16" faux paneling stuff... Just above my 8-track deck.
I used to be into those velvet paintings, but I took them down to hang up my black light posters. Some of them are velvet too.
"with all due respect, and remember i'm saying with all due respect, that idea aint worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin getting it on" Ricky Bobby
Nope, not hardly ! LOL The same estate sold some expensive (beyond my range, anyway) bronzes & other things. This was the very first item up. I bid and the auctioneer yelled SOLD ! LOL Woke up the audience though ! It was the lowest priced item of the night. Besides, everyone needs a 31 1/2 x 38 1/2 oil portrait of a good looking woman in a brief dress in their den, right ? LOL
While we're on the subject of portraits, this is a print of a watercolor my Mom painted of my great-great-great uncle. The original is hanging in my cousin's office in Houston. Mom was an artist for 75 years. She passed in 2006, and to me, this is priceless. Chris
Talk about free advertising!! I bet gold and silver pawn has atleast doubled If Not tripled there business, Due to the show
And do folks really believe that those Pickers guys actually make a worthwhile living? Or the Rolloff [little people] farm actually earns enough to cover their bills selling pumpkins, or that Kate and Jon actually can afford to have 8 toddlers running around? Of course these shows are all staged, and these folks receive compensation!!!
The one show that really burns me up is that Duggars show. Popping out kids like rabbits. I heard him on tape saying he has no problem accepting charity. Why produce MORE kids if one is already accepting charity??
When these "reality" shows first started, I remember a reviewer saying that these shows were a goldmine for the producers because they didn't have to pay union wages since these characters weren't actors. All they had to pay for was three camera men, editing and whatever fee was negotiated to the performers. Then they would market these shows to the highest bidder.
Absolutely ! You know my favorite artist is "Duo". Especially fond of the Astronomer that I think is hanging in the Getty. I will never be able to afford a fine painting, nor have anyplace to safely hang one. And as I said, I am not fond of Jackson Pollack, but there are some things that grab each of us. And you don't have to like a piece of art to appreciate it. Good to keep the fathers of your family with you, to know where you came from.
I don't know about pawn stars or any other shows on right now but if anyone ever watched dogtown on national geographic the network didn't pay anything to best friends organization for the filming rights. A friend of mine works there. However it did bring it more recognition. It may have been due to the fact that they are a non profit I don't know. Guy
I don't know why Nat Geo just doesn't rename their network "DWN". Every time I switch to that channel, I see that guy Caesar with his Dog Whisperer show.
