Anyone here used these for long term storage. I was wondering how well they worked. I plan on using them for bullion coins. They sure stack up nice kind of like real think poker chips!
stack very nice, little slippery, good good protection.only pain can be removing them, they close pretty good.I have to use a razor blade to get in between the crack to remove them.
I use them, love them and recommend them... just find a good source that you can buy in bulk for the best price, and watch out for shipping on your orders if you do so by mail rather than from a local shop. Also do a CT search to look up other threads with discussion about AirTites, your question comes up frequently.
I believe some folks have had issues with the foam rings that surround certain coins in terms of toning or even having the foam partially disintegrate over time.
Can you provide any more info or links about the foam problem? I am very interested in this aspect as I inquired some time in the past and it didn't seem to raise any alerts around here, but it is a concern I have had about the foam ring type AirTites.
This would be something I believe I read on the PCGS boards perhaps four or five years ago. They have a good search feature on that site.
Thanks. I try to find something on it there. BTW, Very nice website and collection you have there at Ivy League Coin.
Thanks for the kind words about my coins and website. I'm searching the PCGS forums right now, but their feature seems a bit slow at the moment.
In this thread one member states that his ASEs have acquired a slight rose toning around the rims after storage in Airtites that had foam inserts. However, other members state within this thread that they have never seen such a problem. It seems to me that I had read about this problem more than one time on the PCGS boards, otherwise it would not have popped into my head right away. Perhaps I will find more threads later.
Thanks Tom. I have seen some ASEs that used to be sold in novelty holders, which were a piece of printed cardboard inside an acrylic snap-close case which have had a rosy-copper like color of tone around the rims. I wouldn't mind the tone one bit if it's not caused by the foam leeching plasticizers or gassing off over time. I have read the manufacturers web site before and they claim: So for those Air-Tites I have with ring type holders, I have felt secure that PVC was not an issue for concern.
Unfortunately there is not a direct for all coins. I wasn't able to find one for the Canadian Maple series.
I use and like foam ring airtites. I don't like the direct fit because of the way they put pressure on the rims.
Maples are 38mm, the Direct Fit H-39 AirTite is designed for 1 oz. Silver Rounds and the Ring-Type I-39 is also for Silver Rounds and does fit Maples. JPs Corner.com Ring Gauge
To be all honest about this issue,If their just "bullion" I wouldnt worry too much about them.toned,no tone.its all just bullion right? Now if you want to keep them pristine, then you have to refer to them as coins. not to be picky, but it can be confusing reading posts,if you are referring to one or the other.bullion has only silver content value, coins have numismatic value based on their overall condition. And for the maple's you should leave those in the Mint packaging.
It is for this reason that I have put my raw bullion SAEs in Intercept Shield Holders as I want them to stay bright white for as long as possible. So far so good. I do have other coins in Airtites with both foam and direct fit though and also have had no issues yet. TC
Tom, I raised this issue on the NGC forums in 2005. I had 30 Morgans in the AirTites with the black accent ring, and the edge of every one turned black. If you are going to use AirTites, I suggest that you use the "direct fit" type. You can get them at JP's Corner, and it is best to buy them in 250ct. as it will cut the price in half. http://www.jpscorner.com/AirTite_Direct_Fit_AirTite_Coin_Holders.htm Someone mentioned about it being hard to separate the discs. It is best to keep the tops (smooth-edge) and bottoms (flanged) separated. I use large ziploc baggies. A partial vacuum is created when you put the two halves together empty, and it is very hard to get them apart unless you use a fine-edged blade like a razor or X-acto knife. You should also consider how you plan to store the coins in AirTites. Eagle Coin Holders has 20-slot pages for 3-ring binders that will hold discs up to 2" diameter, but they have a tendency to crack at the 3-ring holes and along the tabs that hold the discs in place. They are a little pricey, too! I used to keep my casino chips in them, but have since removed them and opted for the red 2x2 storage boxes. Each box will hold 37 discs, and are much, much cheaper.
