OKAY! Sorry I lost my train of thought. Monday I call and talk to a representative about joining up and hpow to submit all three. Thanks everyone for keeping my sights fixed on the final target. But don't forget these coins aren't mine, they're my friend's coins.
Just some trivia. I compared my pics/scans with PCGS pics of the 1854-D and I swear my freind's $3 coin is better that their AU-50. Has better and more hairlines. More outline in the knots above the feathers. And clear as day you can see the eyeball with the bulge of the iris. Doubling is prevalent on TED in UNITED. On the reversre the leaves have more and clearer veins. The tobaco and cornstalks are more defined and the top beady blossoms of corn are sharper too. Oh well we'll see what NGC has to say.

Zeke, any dealers in your neck o' the woods associated with NGC or PCGS? You might take some of the hassle out of submitting by letting them submit the coins for you. Just a thought.

 

Wow, just saw this thread, very cool find!! Definitely submit them for authentication. If your a member of the ANA I'm pretty sure you can submit to NGC w/o a separate membership w/ NGC.

Let me run this by you everyone. I want to join NGC and I'll go for the ' Elete' membership. Then, can I submit the coins in my friend's name. If this isn't allowed, how then, do I get these coins tranferred in his name when everything is said and done and the slabbed coins are in my hands and registered to me? I sure don't want my name associated with them since I'm not the owner. I hope y'all follow what I just said.

 

The 1853 $1 gold liberty head with coronet still has some (3) spots with PVC on the reverse. After a 20 minuet acetone soak, then days later a 10 minuet soak. See scans. I don't want to hurt this coin so should I continue with short soaks or give it another 20 minuet soak. I have NO experience with soaking coins in acetone. Gold is suppose to be inert. Will
it react with the acetone to the point the finish/luster is ruined?

 

Does anyone no if thse, the above PVC scans, will detract from the coins final grade? Look at the scan below and on the top left of the bow is the third PVC spot which has been greatly reduced with the two soaks.

Good there's a place to show off my new (old and worn) gold Liberty piece that I'm still waiting to receive. Plenty worn but that's alright, I'm working myself up to something nicer.

BTW: Very nice $3 dollar gold piece!! I have to wait a long time to get something that nice as them there gold pieces go for the major scrillage!!

Have no fear. You can leave it in the acetone overnight if you wish.

 

If you join NGC you can submit coins, it doesn't necessarily mean that you own them and far as I know there is no "association" record kept, they just record the grade, cert no, etc. All you do is list the coin, date, mintmark, etc and choose the grading service you want and estimated value. Hope this helps ...

Hey THANKS. I 'll be pretty disappointed if it doesn't grade that. I've compared dozens of pictures of $3 coins and I stand on my very amatuer grading techniques. I've leaned so much about this coin and various other $3 in the 1850 - 1880's . Really shouldn't compare other years to 1854-D but in general, diagnostics are similar. But it is unique and has its own design characteristics.

 

Okay, after mailing the 1854-D $3 dollar gold coin on Apil 27, 2010, last Tuesday, I got a USPSnotice that it has been delivered to the post office of The Collector's Society. That's zip code 34230. It doesn't mean that they
have received it or That it was put in their P O Box. Man, six days seemed like a lifetime.
Before sending it by registered mail and insured to the max, my friend came over with his brand new digital micrometer and we measured all three coins and reweighed them too because he wasn't there when I weighed them the fist time. Everything checked out very, very close.
I have been comparing any $3 '54-D I could find. PCGS, NGC, Heritage, even ebay when pics or scans were decent. What differences in grading there is. I sure hope that I don't disagree with the grade it gets. I'm telling you it is an above average coin. At least EF-45, with a great chance to be graded AU-55 or 58, from the tens of tens of them I've compared.
