Hey everyone! This is my 1856 3 Cent Silver coin that I miraculously "dug" while Metal Detecting around an old cellar hole very deep in the woods about 20 years ago. It was incredible how I was able to pick up the signal because the "fish scale" coin as some called it because of its thickness and diameter of only 14 mm(smallest U.S Siver coin) was approx. 6-8 inches down and not far from a Silver-plated suspender buckle that I have but can't find at this time.:(
Please post your "Fish Scales" and let's see how many years we can get. Thanks for reading!:)

This specimen was my last purchase of a fish scale. Holed but... for $30 and its a proof coin that for some reason someone holed and joined it by the loop to a mate that was the same a proof coin.
BTW some 400 proofs of this date were melted back down. s-l1600-3~2.png s-l1600-2~2.png

Here is a Type I in MS-66. These coins are harder to find than you might think. The 75% silver and 25% copper alloy seems to be prone to developing ugly spots. The Type II and III coins were 90% silver and 10% copper.

The 1851-O has long been one of my favorite coins. The one I had in high school had a weak date. This is far better.

I highly recommend this book if you collect US silver 3 cent pcs. One of the only references out there. 20221104_125950.jpg

Looking at this specimen youll notice theres significant amount of doubling on the date there's no variety for this specimen. However my eyes say different. I personally believe that it is a rpd and should be attributed as such. Look at the 1 and the flag next to the 5 there's the top corner of the 5 to the upper right. 3c. silver 1851-O pcgs obv.jpg 20221104_131036.jpg
