Guess the grade on these two Seated Half Dimes. Feel free to post any comments as to why you gave the coin a specific grade. Both coins are CAC certified.
From a first day grader: 1853: MS-64 (there is no price note/list for a MS64 in the Red Book, so I do not feel very confident.) - This 1853 had some coloring on the reverse that was attractive to me, but I was not sure if it was environmental staining, or natural toning. The surface was well formed. Definately an uncirculated. Could this be a fake or a treasure? The die appears off center. The rim on the obverse (left) side floats more than I would expect. Since MS-64 are not common for this year? Was it buried? The die placement strikes me as one of the most unique features, as well as the lack of wear. Did you get the pic from a Stack's catalogue? It appears to be from the Philadelphia Mint. 1857: F-12 (Is the coloring natural?)- Thanks again for letting me try.
After further review (and just to mess with RLM), I think I undergraded the second coin. I think I mistook some JPEG artifacts for nicks.
p.s. and knowing how NGC assigns 66's, one or both of these coins in higher-than-65 graded slabs wouldn't surprise me either (how's that for a out?) -- I see very few contact marks on either coin that would limit the grade.
I purchased these great looking coins from Mark Feld and subsequently had them both certified by CAC. Mark had a large offering of Half Dimes last year that were consigned to him by a collector. There was many outstanding coins that were offered. I picked out 15 or so coins that I liked and narrowed then down to these two based on Mark’s recommendations and his understanding of what I look for in a coin.
