Why can't the so called fact checkers bust the get rich click bait mongers on YouTube? Not only there, but all the others that start off by "if you have one of these, you are rich!" hype! What a crock. Bad, bad, bad for this hobby.
Anybody who believes that crap wouldn't have lasted long in this hobby anyway. At least there is SOME redeeming value with the infomercials and their 30-35% overpriced coins.
Been happening since I was a wee lad. Actually I think this kind of hype raises awareness and in so doing, draws more people into the hobby.
Aside from CoinTalk, I avoid Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and every other social media platform in existence. Except, that is, for YouTube, which I consume hours of on a daily basis. There's tons of misinformation and shysters on there to be sure, but it also serves as an immense source of information and entertainment if you are rational enough to navigate the waters. There will always be lowlifes that are willing to take advantage of people for their own gains, and they are a problem. But, the real problem is that such a large proportion of our society is effectively stupid enough to make it worth their while.
I've found good stuff on Twitter, but it's been getting harder and harder to read past the flame-fanning. Recent news doesn't lead me to expect that the flames will die down. I still don't like videos, except for certain very specific things (mostly how-to-do-it tutorials). CoinTalk, and the occasional news aggregator. That's about it.
I can't understand a damn thing on twitter, what with all of the @s, #s and other random puncuation marks mixed in with very few proper english words.
My kids were taught in school how to recognize BS. I think there's a generation or two where we skipped right over that, ripe for the plucking by all these "social media" platforms. So many posts in coin forums where you can tell that they came straight over from watching one of those "get rich from pocket change" videos. Not that it hasn't been going on since the Max Mehl days...
This hobby has always been filled with hype. It's good when new folks bring it to the forums. It helps others learn the truth.
I have a new book coming out on how to get Mega-Rich on PocketChange !! oh wait, I bought one of those books in the 80s. oh well. Back to work.
YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc.? I don't have an account on any of them. I spend too much time in front of my computer as is. I stick with CoinTalk and Coin Community. I don't need more places to search.
That hype is actually kinda legit, the ones that erk me are the blatant lies about what something is worth but they never say who will pay that. When someone actually has the item and find out that a collector will not give near what was advertised for it, then it is always assumed that all collectors are liars and crooks. Some are, most aren't.
First question, what is "Coin Community"? I haven't seen that reference before. Also, I like to speed some time on the ANA website, especially the Blogs. I like to watch the coin programs on television. I have learned a lot from them. I don't buy from them, but I do like to watch them for about 10-15 minutes. There are a couple of coin shows that only show their hands. I don't see any hype from the Mint. You either like their stuff or you don't. Their problem is they don't make enough of the good stuff and make too much of the stuff you can't give away. I like to troll ebay sometimes. Every blue moon I buy some of the items on ebay, but you have to be careful to read the fine print, because most of them are like the Wizard of Oz because they are behind the curtain and you don't know who you are dealing with.
I assume they mean Coin Community Forum/Family, often abbreviated CCF. Lots of knowledgeable people there too.
Yeah there’s a few coins I’m always hopeful of surfacing. A couple I think highly unlikely and a couple probable. There’s still a chance I think of another 1894 s dime being discovered. I always hope of a 1870-s quarter being discovered or another 1822 $5. And I think there’s more 1817/4 50c. 1802 reverse of 1800 half cent 1796-7 50c 1794$1 1796 half cents 1793 liberty caps Higley coppers etc out there to be discovered or detected
