I am looking for some prooflike gold coins. I would like someone's opinions about collecting those coins. Are there a lot of people collecting them? Are they as popular like prooflike Morgan dollars? Thanks.
Strictly from my own personal observations, I do not believe they are in anyway near the popularity of Morgans; a mere smidgen. IMO there are a lot of Morgan collectors, and they are a very large and extremely devoted bunch. I've heard some folks say that they seem to have all drank out of the same pitcher of Kool-Aid. :goofer:
I think between PCGS and NGC, only NGC designates PL gold. I'm sure it's a small base, but I'd love to have all I could find. NGC has certified almost 1500 out of over half million $20 Liberty's with a PL designation. There are even a few Bust $10 and $5 available. It looks like the only series where there are not any PL's are the $5 and $10 Indians.
I have Liberty Head and Indian Head Quarter & Half Eagles, but they sit in a safe deposit box, just in case the 2012 Mayan calendar ends up being right. :goofer: For me, other than that, they don't do much for me numismatically.
The challenge with prooflike gold is that unless you collect them in extremely high grade, they show marks/hairlines much worse than regular non-prooflike coins.
You don't know what you're talking about! Now, if it was a pitcher of beer, that would be a different story. Chris
Thanks. Now, compare that coin (which now resides in a PCGS MS 65 slab) to this one, which is in XF/AU condition: And you can see why I said what I did earlier (prooflike gold only looks good in very high grade).
I have more than a few but they end up in the safety deposit box and I seldom get to see them. What good is beauty if you can't behold it. And a very expensive habit.
Leadfoot, what grade would you recommend for PL gold? Is 62 high enough, or would you recommend 63 (or more)? I need to know how much the gold in my typeset is going to set me back. I know that prooflike coins show the marks much worse - which is why prooflike coins are often graded far more strictly than normal coins. That first gold dollar you show is fantastic. Do you mind me asking what it grades?
Here is an NGC 62PL. You can see why 62 with all the little hits. Not a real good shot at the pl fields, but it is every bit of a pl.
They don't look good, generally, below 64. Occasionally you'll see a nice 63, but rarely in my experience do you see a nice 62. However there are always exceptions to every rule, and Robec's coin appears quite nice in the photos....Mike p.s. the first coin I posted is PCGS 65.
