how do you spot fake Trade Dollars, anyway?

I agree completely with @ksparrow. Definitely a fake, just banged up to try and cover the diagnostics. When you compare the details from his authentic 76 II/II, it's not even close.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been away from these boards for a while - spend most of my time on the PCGS boards. If anyone wants to see a virtually complete set of all Trade Dollar varieties, check out my showcase set (Zambezi Collection) in the Registry...

A whizzed Trade Dollar, ID'd by ICG. The coin is genuine, but the technique could be used to make a fake coin more "market acceptable." Thought it was appropriate here (also posted on the whizzed coins thread)

Seller didn't provide a side pic, so I don't know what the reeding looks like. I thought everything else looked good.

Glad you find the thread helpful! That coin looks genuine to me, but I am concerned about the hazy area by Liberty's midsection. Could be just some milky haze, could be from some mechanical process, could be from PVC. Overall the coin appears to have MS details. Welcome to the forum, are you from Richmond Va by any chance (RVA)?

I can’t call. What’s going on around the rim. On obverse. Weight ?? Denticles look decent. Portrait look ok but question a couple things. Especially facial details. Pics outside the 2x2 would help. More sleep and Less drinks in me might help too

I saw the facial details, didn't know. What I looked for was date placement and MM position. I couldn't nail down a variety. But seemed to follow the hub of the 801 and 802
    Both are DDR's.

It has the missing "toe" on the R of DOLLAR, from a damaged hub or master (I forget which)

On looking again. I think it’s most likely ok. Nice semi pl surface too. Yet to see a bogus one with that look

    Hello to all,

has someone ever seen a fake like this? Seller says 38,2 mm and 26,5 gr

what attracts my attention is the 900 lettering.

Hi! Unfortunately, I didn't end up winning that TD. At the last minute, the bidding got too rich for my blood, and I had to pull out.

Yes. I'm a born & raised Richmonder. You know I gotta represent the 804! :playful:

Edit: I just thought about your handle, and I know a K Sparrow in Richmond...
