i won this a few days ago for $17.05 ...

i know it's not rare ... but does anyone know if this coin contains any silver? my redbook doesnt give that info for some reason.

i really like the eagle on the back! (I recently saw this coin in someone's type collection)

    thank you!

wow ... so i got this for about the melt value of the silver?

it's pretty cool for a bullion coin

surprised someone paid for the NGC grading ... that might have cost as much as the coin is worth?

Melt is about $13.65 on these.

    thanks for that info!!!
    i'll take that ...

i actually bought it because I like the design (esp the back) ... the fact that there is over $13 in silver is a bonus!

with over 1 million minted these will never have much value over melt.

It could have been a dealer sending a large group in hoping for some 70's.

It's one of the mysteries of numismatics. I've seen well circulated modern coins with no known valuable varieties in slabs.

That is a nice coin for that price. For future reference, if you look on the label, the S after 1984 is for the S.F. mint of course, but the S next to $1 stands for 'silver'. In other words, it's saying silver dollar, very abreviated in order to fit on the slab. All the one dollar commemoratives that they've made, that I know of, are the same composition as a Morgan or a Peace dollar. 0.773 oz. of silver in each one.

It's easy to tell from the insert if the coin is silver. The first line is:

    1984 S OLYMPICS S$1

The "S" before the dollar sign that I've highlighted in blue means that it is silver. If it had been clad, that "S" wouldn't be there.

I have the same coin graded exactly like that. I didn't pay much more than that. The dealer I bought it from said the same thing you did.
