Everyone's seen the show, but has anybody here ever been to Las Vegas and visited the store? I see they have coins behind the counter. I wonder what the mark-up is on their stuff.
First off, never been to the store. Secondly, they have very high prices. They are selling common date morgans (MS64) in the 70-80 dollar range. I would imagine their other stuff would be just as high. My only sources are one of my friends who has been to the store, and seeing a video, where I froze it to make out same prices. (I believe I saw an 1887 MS64 PCGS for $79) Wickidy Wickidy Whack!
You needed to cherry pick Rick's inventory of raw Morgan's before the Old Man got his glasses, he couldn't tell the CC's from the O's & S's and priced the Carson City's cheap.
I havent' been to there either. I saw the show with the 1932-S and the show where the 'Old Man' didn't have his glasses... A lot of the items they showcase are very interesting. However, those guys themselves come across to me as being overpriced, obnoxious, self-ingratiating hams.
Next time I go to Las Vegas I am going to stop by their shop. I heard their prices are high as well. TC
In the "Old Man's Glasses" episode you might recall that his son said that the (common date) CC Morgan was a $500 coin. Not only was it a circ coin, but when he tested the old man, it was mixed in with a lot of other raw Morgans, and they were banging and scraping against one another. $500? Yeah, right! I went to Las Vegas every year from 1995-2007 for the pool tournaments, and I always stayed at the Riv. There is a small coin shop in the Riv, Frank's Coins, that is run by his brother, Patrick. I was a once-a-year "regular customer", but Patrick would always give me really good deals on Morgans. Sometimes I would make an offer below a listed price, and he would say, "Nah, that's too much! I'll give it to you for..........." I always told myself that I would stop by Sahara Coins, but I never did. Chris
Kanga - it is a good show to watch just to see what people bring in. Like East Indies ship wreck bell, 16th and 17th century guns, antiques, etc. This is the only reality show that I look for and watch - just to see what cool items people bring in. Kind of like watching the antique road show. I am going to Vegas, but won't get near the shop.
I DO watch Antiques Roadshow quite often. I miss Antiques Roadshow - UK, especially the guy that does china, etc. They tell someone that their item is worth £10,000, and the response is often "Oh, that's nice." So understated. LOL And I DO watch one reality show, but I prefer NOT to mention its name. As they often say in coin descriptions, "Just mentioned for accuracy and completeness."
I agree! I also liked the episode where the guy brought in the large clump of silver rupees that dated back to the reign of Shah Jahan who had the Taj Mahal built in memory of his wife. The cluster was one of three that were recovered from a shipwreck, and then one of the three clusters was lost again in the tsunami that hit a few years ago. Chris
Never been but i enjoy watching the show! It kind of aggravates me to as They seem to try and get over on people by offering them pennies on the Dollar, And then asking triple what they paid, I guess thats the pawn business!!
antiques roadshow is just as off the wall as pawn stars is. they tell you the prices of objects at auctions as if they were always in pristine condition and everyone had cash coming out of every orifice. at least with pawn stars you have someone possibly buying the object for a better idea of real value.
The tv show aside, ALL pawn shops have a very high mark up on everything they sell. You see how Rick nickels and dimes everyone with something to sell, that's so he can mark it up 1000% and make a ton of money off the items. This is standard in all pawn shops. Buy/lend low, so you can turn around and sell very high. I know, I used to work in a pawn shop!
Do "real" pawn shops constantly get outside help to appraise what is brought in like these guys? The pawn shops I go to don't. I was watching clips on youtube. There is a line of people outside. If you have something to sell or pawn, you get to the front of the line. If you're just visiting, you get two minutes to look. On a couple videos, Chumley's there. He'll let you take your picture with him. I bet those other three rarely go there, except to count the money. Did you see the episode where the old man sent Chumley to his house to pick up a necklace? What a house!!! These guys must rake in the dough. Also, there's quite a few people working there. If Chumley is as stupid as he acts and I worked there, I'd be really mad knowing the favoritism he gets from the bosses. I looked at their web site. They do a lot of payday loans and stuff like that. The only thing they had for sell on the web site were Pawn Star t-shirts. BTW, I also looked up Antique Archaeology web site. These are the guys from Pickers. All they sell on their web site is t-shirts also. I would really love to see what's in both inventories and what they sell things for. I bet these guys are expensive too.
I love this show. I watch it on demand and the new episodes on every Monday night at 10:00p.m. EST. I would guess they charge alot for the merchandise, I mean they are on tv.
