Just picked this up today. Not quite sure on the attribution but I am leaning strongly towards O-116. However, this is my first bust half that has come to me in TPG plastic. It is NGC, but I'll leave it to you to give me the grade they assigned to it.
What can I say, I love to share my finds and buys. Plus the wife'll look, but won't really understand, or go ooooh and aaaah.
I see some luster but the wear on the eagles head, the scratch thru the shield and the hit on the neck bring me back to my fiftyfive...but time will tell.
need pictures of of the edge Can you post pictures of the edge lettering/motto before we guess the overall grade ? Thanks
Nice coin, I have two "slabbed" Busties, but they are Ungraded in capitol holders, Looking at the coin, it appears to me that the scratches I am seeing are on the holder, there might be an old cleaning/dipping there that seems to be retoning pretty well. I have a difficult time telling luster from photos, so the grade could be better if the detail issues are strike or wear, I would say it was at least a 45 and possibly a 55
BQ First of all, I like bust halves and think this one looks very nice. I don't collect them (I have a few raw) in part because I have not been able to figure out how to grade them. A lot of bust coins that look like they have rub to me are graded as MS by the TPGs. Having said all that, I will join the crowd at AU58. Enjoy it! Worth two hammers on the Breakdown grading scale.:hammer::hammer:
I'm going to guess 53. The coin has enough wear that it won't (shouldn't) ever make it into an MS slab - look at her cheek, hair, eagle's feathers (especially the protected ones towards the center). Oridinarily, I probably would have guessed 55, but NGC has been very tough on early US stuff - hence my guess of 53.
