Which dime are you referring to? Is it the on that has the bluish reflection on it or one of the other 2 I see?
the 3rd photo is the view from my front door I took the pictures from the end of the track. a little bit of a walk to take them from the start line. I'm including a link to a video from this past weekend races. https://www.facebook.com/1000577938...xQxwt2UqN9yEuoMbs78jYC5n4w1MepyKMaCl/?app=fbl
Exact date when they were transferred to the obverse eludes me at the moment, but I'm sure some nice YN will enlighten me........
I'm assuming from the way it's rotting that it's a Zincoln; it would take some work to make a bronze cent look like that. Lincoln Memorial cents were struck on copper-coated zinc from late 1982 through 2008, if I'm remembering correctly.
The Mints stopped putting mintmarks on coins with the 1965-dated issues (they were still striking 1964-dated coins well past the end of that calendar year). They started again in 1968. On nickels, dimes, quarters, and halves, the mint mark moved from its old position on the reverse to a new position on the obverse.
Mint marks were on the reverse of a great many coins, except the cent, for a long time. They appeared on the obverse of gold coins ($2.50 and $5.00) in 1838 and 1839. They were on the obverse of Standing Liberty Quarter and on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar in 1916 and '17. The St. Gaudens $20 gold coin also had the mint mark on the obverse. There are a couple of examples. 1939-C $5 gold 1842-C half eagle with the "C" mint mark on the reverse.
There are so many coins I have never seen. I wasn't aware that a $2.50 coin existed. The reason being is because I have not looked at any older coins. I think the oldest coin I have is a 1947 wheat back cent.
All the mint mark information is in the Redbook. Plus it has pics of all US coins. $2.50, $3, and $4 gold. Half cents, 3 cent nickel and 3cent silver. The book has a tremendous amount of info. I used to read it constantly as a kid and learned so much about coins. It will be the best $15 you ever spend on the hobby. Buy it and read it. There is A 2023 edition.
There used to be one not far from where I grew up that was called Dragway 42 (because it was on US route 42). Their radio ad slogan was "When you're near it, you'll hear it!"
I’ve only been to one sprint car race and it was a load of fun. But that’s a lot different than a drag strip.
Were the Branch Mints minting them then or just distributing them from the Philly Mint? It never occurred to me to inquire.
