i just received my first english hammered penny! it's an edward i penny, silver, 1.24g, class 10? (1301-1310 a.d.), canterbury mint. +EDW R ANGL DNS HYB obverse CIVITAS CANTOR reverse i'm not 100% sure on the class, and the guy i bought it from didn't know either. but anyway, here's my first, of hopefully many, english hammered coins! hope you enjoy!
Real One This must be a Real One as nobody has picked on you for not calling it a Cent. Great Photos! But I'll just have to take your word about the rest of it
Lovely coin mate, nice photos. First hammered I've seen on this forum I think apart from the stuff I've posted. I have the same coin but from London mint x3 or 4 :S lol
The writing on these medieval coins is very hard to read. I have a dozen or so of the coins, but only five or six books. I often think that to fully understand what you have with coins like this, you need more books than coins. Same is true of most ancient coins. High grade, well-centered examples of such coins are beyond my budget.
My only and best guide is a 2002 English coinage guide that cost me £1 and I can identify most of my coins.
+EDW R ANGL DNS HYB = Edward King of England and lord of Ireland CIVITAS CANTOR reverse = city of Canterbury
Great going Swish and Frank. It is indeed a very nice coin. I appreciate the opportunity to learn about these ancient coins.
HYB apparently must be an abbreviation for Hibernia, and the term 'R' is for King (Reg), but how do you get the term "lord of" from DNS?
thank you! and it depends on the condition of the coin. edward i and edward ii pennys are common and usually go for less than $100, though some mints are harder to obtain (berwick-upon-tweed comes to mind) and command slightly more of a premium. i purchased this one for less than $50.
