To the Franklin Half Dollar crowd, Does anybody collect either type 1 and 2 or both or just collect them in general and not care about the type? I'll await somebody saying "that topic was covered over and over again in old theards, just search them". :goof:
Sarcastic sigh, "That topic was covered overand over again! Try searching the threads..." Had to do it since you asked. I'm just now beginning to collect the Franklins. Even though I don't have either of those years (I believe 58 and 59) I do plan on collecting both type 1 and 2. I see them as varieties after all....
Excuse me but your "the dime guy". I'm "the half dollar guy". If you get into halfs, I'll get into dimes. And that's when things go crazy. Cats chasing dogs. Sheep eating lions. Poles shifting. Al Gore claims gobal cooling. Crazy stuff.
Funny! You forgot one though: O---a not being a socialist! Anyways, I purchased a complete Franklin album of VF pluses about a year ago for schweet price. I have a special affinity for the Franklins - I think it's because when I was a very young, I'd always get one in my weekly allowance... In the mid-70's they must've been still quite common in circulation. It also seems like the Franklin series gets an underrated rap - too bad...
They weren't. It was far more common to find half dollars in circulation in the mid-seventies than it is now, but 90% silver coins like the Franklin were all gone. Just look at the mintages -- there were almost as many 1964 Kennedys made as Franklins of all dates combined. You clearly had a numismatic guardian angel.
I wrote an extensive article, covering everything you need to know about type II reverse Franklins. I have several of them, although I am still missing the DDR. I welcome any questions or comments, either here or on the thread I posted. http://www.cointalk.com/t72184/
Haha, very true. I try to keep politics out of my posts for the most part. Plus being a party hack it gives me a hobby that doesn't give you headaches. Which party? Oh, I wasn't excited over the results in 2008 but looking foward to Nov. I'll leave it at that. Yeah, the Franklins don't seem to get a lot of love. Very cool that you got a VF+ set. I have a varying set that I'm working on moving to UNCs and proofs.
Good show! Knew the Type II Frankins were different in the wing. However never read anything that in depth to date about them. Thank you.:high5:
LOL...don't look at as an invasion into your realm; I'm just visiting Franklins until grad school is over and I can afford decent quality Barber Dimes. And I welcome you over to see some Roosevelts or Mercs...I assure you they are a lot easier to carry out a dealer's shop than a bulky half. PS. Great avatar. I'm a fan of Nelson myself, but Burns has character as well.
That is a great thread. I learned a lot and am a big fan of the Type II reverse now. Any idea of mintages for the 1958 or 1959 (even an approximation)?
I discuss this in detail towards the end of the article. The fact is, no one really knows. Maybe 4 dies for 1958, and maybe 3 dies for 1959? But there is no telling how many coins each die struck, since they may have been recycled proof dies and already struck a fair number of coins before being put in use for business strikes.
Haha, the cult of Franklin is always looking for new members. It's pretty underloved so it's usually open to even dime collectors. I do have one 1941 junk Merc I bought for two dollars at a Flea Market just so I could have a Merc dime. You are right though, they are easier to carry. The commons are much cheaper too. One day I'm moving to smaller coins so it's less cash outflow then the dollars and halfs. Start at the top and work you down somtimes. Agreed, Nelson is great.
There's a Type II ! Next thing you'll know the TPG's will be adding FBL's to the label...what's that? They already have! I need to get out more often.
