Anyone have ideas on the source of this toning stripe across this 1936 Washington Quarter? Looks to me it might have been in a holder or drawer and a thin band of material or something was across the surface to hold it in place. Maybe...or another source? Inquiring mystery-minds want to ponder...
I have heard that rubber bands make those marks, maybe in an old envelope on top in a stack of others where the sulfur in the paper is held up against the coin by the band?
That makes a lot of sense. At this suggestion I googled "rubber band coin toning" with similar images and Forum thread discussion from THIS and other sites. I'm open to other possibilities or elaboration...after a bit I might show the rest of the slab re how the coin was graded.
It would appear...NO or Maybe. Not much I can see on the high points of IGWT....or is there. I haven't the best eyes.
Since I went ahead and purchased another from a different site, here's is the entire slab with grade.
There were coin wallets and advertising folders with a cardboard sleeve across the center to secure the coin.
