Any word on 2010 Silver Proofs?

There was an ongoing article series on Coin News where they were discussing a question and answer with Mint Director Ed Moy. From my recollection this was for the release of the Lincoln pennies (?). Anyway, the overwhelmingly important question to have asked him was 'what are the prospects for 2010 SAE proof production'?
There were only 2 out of 3 installments released and published and I have not seen or heard anything since. Am I mistaken? does anyone know any other info that was published?

The mint has made statements that they would like to start making them again, but that does not mean they will. HOOORAhHH FOR 2010 buffalo though!

This is like the 3rd time this inquiry has been made this week! Now a new thread on it? What's going on...? There has been no official press release but you can bet when there is it will be all over the coin press, blogs and forums. Stay tuned but let's limit the number of times this query keeps coming up until then... :hammer:

Also, why not write to the editior / author of those articles and ask the same then let us know what you hear back from them? I've read those articles as well. I assume there is no new information from the Mint/Moy to report so you have not yet seen the next update to the series of articles.

I suppose it's a burning question in the collectors' minds. Didn't realize others had already posed it.

It is indeed a huge topic and many are curious what 2010 will bring.

The Mint's website has the same notice on their ASEs that was put up last year when they were low on the planchets for making proofs and burnished strikes.

I just read an article in Numismatic News this week where Moy said that demand for the business strike ASE's was up this year even higher than it was last year. And that unless demand slows, there will no Proofs this year either.

I fully expect to hear the worst as they have been too quiet on this issue.

Demand or not, collectors en masse ought to be writing to their elected officials demanding more from their Mint and to have these coins issued.

I'm asking the same questions everyone else is asking: how do we have enough silver to issue the 2 commemoratives this year but nothing for the proofs???
How about all the silver going into the silver mint and quarter sets?? you might say the commems are mandated by law, but these are not however..

What Buffalo? Are they releasing the gold buffalo soon again. I checked a few days ago, and did not locate any for sale.

I couldn't care less about the buffalos.

    We want the silver proofs!

I wish that both continue to be minted in collectors versions. If not on sale for the general public, then at least for those of us who subscribe to the subscription based coins offered.

Krispy, you'll get a form letter back saying your member of Congress is very "pro coin collecting" because "coin collecting is American and what's American is good for America" and will look into the issue. Because in "Their America, American way of life is for coin collecting and coin collecting is the American way of life."

That's not really a joke. I've worked in politics for years. To be totally honest you'll get a form letter brush off. Given all the issues going on currently, the mint is pretty low on the totem pole.

But, it never hurts to call or write. You might catch a member that thinks... hey, we should be minting these stinkers.

  19. If the US Mint officially stops making ASE proofs, watch for the earlier years to increase in price. These are beautiful coins and many have relatively low mintages. TC

I know that very well... I have received the auto-office reply via emails I have sent in support of coins and specifically regarding last years issues not being released. However, their replies, if at all, are even more brief (economical;)) in words than your example quote suggests. I expected only as much in reply given the amount of work on issues and crisis they have going on, but when are they not inundated by messages and concerns of the public and special interest groups? It's their job as it is mine to inform them of my concerns, therefore I am not deterred by their lack of response. I know my concerns are logged and have been voiced and I urge any and all others like minded and so compelled to do the same, to write, politely, professionally, poignantly and personally expressing individual concerns. If enough voices are raised, heard and the messages carried or forwarded on our behalf to the appropriate offices in Washington, then perhaps we collectors can take special pride in having done the least bit to see our hobby continued and kept alive with quality pieces of craftsmanship and art. :thumb:

It's not that there isn't enough silver - there's plenty of silver, mountains of the stuff out there.

The issue is that the law states that the mint has to produce enough of the bullion business strikes to meet demand.

Now there are two problems with doing that. 1 - the mint has to have the time, machines and manpower to do it. 2 - the mint has to be able to procure enough planchets to make the coins to do it.

As it stands, they can't do it. So there is no time, machines and manpower to do it and there is not enough planchets to do it. Same problems they had last year.

And there is no law that says they have to produce the Proofs. So you can call all the people you want, you can write all the people you want. But it will do no good. Not saying you shouldn't do it anyway. Just stating the reality of the situation.

    As they say, life sucks.
