1883 Shield Nickel

It’s satiny and luster rich but I can’t capture all that on my cell. This is a Variety 2 which has no Rays. This was the last year of production as the nickel was replaced by the Liberty Head or “V” nickel.
There is a die crack from the rim to the I on the motto IGWT. It’s strong near the rim but gets faint as it goes across the coin and gets strong again at the U in TRUST.

I wonder if there's a later die state where that crack developed into an extremely large cud?

Don’t know but I do like the way this crack has formed. I would like to find or even see, the same crack as it progressed.

 

There is only one example of a cud on an 1883 and it's under the date, on the obverse.

 

After thinking about this zi think I’d like to own it.

 

Not sure what zi is though.

 

My phone changes capital I to zi. I don’t always catch it. It does some other strange things too.
