Hi There, Random question, I have a coin that is graded from NGC, under the microscope my zombie eyes see things but the grading does not identify any doubling on the reverse or obverse even though my eyes (I'm still learning, be gentle) tell me otherwise. My question is, since it was previously graded by NGC, would they automatically note something like that if there was in fact doubling when they are grading it? Thanks!
Hi and welcome to CT. I think attributions of varieties and errors have to be requested, and extra costs charged, at initial submission. But not all will be attributed, only those on their lists. This is my understanding, others can no dought elaborate from experience.
You're most likely seeing mechanical or deterioration doubling. Put the microscope away. Even if it's a slight doubled die that needs that much magnification it's not worth it. Doubled die fall under the variety category not the mint error category. NGC will only attribute them if you request and pay for attribution.
Errors have to be, some major varieties are automatic but yea the overwhelming majority have to be requested and even then it has to be a recognized attribution
That's my understanding as well. I believe they have a list of what is automatic and a list that can be shown on the label if you pay the extra fee. They want the fees to help pay for the extra research. I'm good with that.
I submitted a registry quality 1983-P Jefferson Nickel and was expecting a grade of MS67 5FS. To my surprise, the coin actually graded MS68 5FS, but NGC took it upon themselves (without a request) to designate this coin as a partial collar error. As a result of the error designation, the coin is ineligible to compete in the registry. I complained to NGC wanting the error designation removed because I had not requested, nor paid for the error, and a partial collar is a very minor error. I was given a message that the Vice President in charge of errors said that there is no way that the error designation can be removed. You will notice that I only gave you his title, because not only would he not speak with me, the representative wouldn't even give me his name.
Shame that such a gorgeous coin cannot be entered into the registry. If slabs can be returned for re-labelling because of mistake or misprint etc, surely it must be possible! Maybe Doofus McDoofus of the Clan McDoofus, Doofusville, was having a bad day.

Thats interesting, I hadnt heard of getting "free" error designations from them before. I wonder if theyre using the minor error as a form of population control for the registry
