I’m Slowly Being Driven to Insanity

Currently I have 17 albums and folders that I’m working on. I plug an empty slot each time I can, with the correct coin of course. Lol. I’m about to start four more folders, Morgan Dollars.
I was looking at a larger number of my silver dollars and realized that I have a large number of them. I feel I can come close enough to almost fill every hole. Definitely a circulation set of low grade but that makes no difference considering they’re Morgan’s.
The problem is, out of the 17 that I’m working on, 9 of them are within 5 coins or less of being complete. I have checked my LCS, I’ve gone through my coins and I check a few auctions I follow on a monthly basis but nothing.
Some of these are common dates are I can’t find them anywhere. It’s driving me crazy. No photos as I don’t want to show them with empty holes but I will do a post when I get them completed.
Today I searched just over 750 Wheat cents and I filled every hole in a folder from 1940 to 1958. I’m only missing three. I found 2 IHC and I could probably fill 20% of the Wheat Cents from 1909 to 1940. The bag had a large amount of teens, twenties and thirties coins. I can’t start another one until I get some of these filled and off my lists.
Madness, utter madness, but it’s organized madness so I take that as a good thing.

I now understand why you were so excited last week when you filled the Rosie dime book….. Obviously you are not stricken with the OCD like I am. One empty hole drives me completely looney. The thought of seventeen with empty holes? I cannot fathom the thought!

 

Don't let the OCD overcome you dear friend. Keep saying to yourself, 'this is a hobby, this is fun', no pressure. Enjoy the expanse of what you have amassed.

I've always been a compulsive collector. I'd lay out plans for what I wanted to pursue, and then I would expand my range or start up on something completely different when the quick hits started coming along less frequently. The end result would be piles and piles of...... well...... let's euphemistically call it "clutter".

After trimming the fat over and over again (pretty much a guaranteed financial loss), I finally realized that I needed to be more focused in what I was targeting and prioritize quality over quantity. This especially worked well for me because a lot of the enjoyment that I get from my collectables comes from showing them to other people. Laypeople will tend to be entertained while learning about a handful of cool things, but they will be bored to death if it takes an hour to go through 500 things.

That's what works for me anyway, but each to their own.

 

Maybe you should make a list of dates and acceptable condition
you would accept. Ask the forum for help. Jack Beymer out in
California has an extensive price list, usually in Coin World and
Numismatic News. His most recent full page ad in CW monthly
was for Washington quarters. If avg circ bullion pieces like
Wash., walkers, mercs and Franklins send me a list and I can
look the next time at the LCS.

Like @Randy Abercrombie I'm quite OCD also. That being said, I decided to start a nice small population collection of FEC's. I figured I can complete the series without obsessing over the various varieties and have the series done in no time. I thought I'd be able to skip the 1856 since that year was 'just' a pattern coin. I'd only need to compile the 1857 and 1858. Sounds simple as that, doesn't it? Ohhhhh nay nay!

The psychological condition OCD is referred to as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for a very good reason. Trying to complete this very limited population series in MS-64 turned into a very trying and nerve wracking quest. Not to mention daunting in respect to the finances of it.

I'll just leave it at that since I feel my blood pressure creeping up as I type.

In any case, @Collecting Nut I wish you the best in your quest to complete those folders. I know if there's anyone here that can do it, it's you.

Welcome to the club! I've always said, I could have a world class collection if I could focus on just one area. I tend to jump around as well, French colonial coins, Hibernia coppers, Connecticut coppers, large cents, Barber halves, Roman coins, I just can't stick to one!

 

I don't suffer from insanity, i thoroughly enjoy it!

 

I had to quit letting the holes bother me and just enjoy what is already in the collection. Once an album is filled there will be coins that you want to upgrade. Some coins won't match the set or have problems.
I had to get past trying to have everything perfect and move on to something more fun. Not having fun is what will drive you crazy. My family calls me crazy all the time. I can't argue.

I do enjoy driving myself insane. It helps me to stay normal so I can function.

 

Depending upon the source and degree of insanity it may be more appropriate to get assigned to Nurse Goodbody ward.

 

That's what I need to do, figure out what to concentrate on and get rid of the rest.

 

I know you are being humorous but seriously, of the 12,500 plus human illnesses, I think ours is a minor one.

Therapist will suggest we try to focus on one achievable goal (collection). Even a busy hyper honeybee will stick to one type flower at a time.

I gave up on Dahlonega gold. Selling off is painful. I suggest you sell or trade to locals.
