I have a quick question regarding the Eisenhower Dollar series in general and the 1972-P Type 2 Ike specifically: Is PCGS more accurate/conservative in grading this series than NGC? I want to buy a 1972-P Type 2 Ike and have been looking for a PCGS MS63, but just found a very nice NGC MS64 for much less than a comparable PCGS MS64 (about $150 less) and just a bit more than the PCGS MS63 (about $75 more). I agree with the adage of "buy the coin and not the slab/holder" but just wanted to know if PCGS is significantly better in grading this series than NGC. In other words, if an NGC MS64 was cracked out of it's slab and submitted to PCGS would it likely only attain a MS63 grade? Thanks! TC
PCGS is usually more conservative on a lot more things than NGC has been, but as of late NGC has been very conservative.
In my experience, yes, they are a bit more conservative (particularly in grades 64 and above) and just about the same in terms of accuracy/consistency.
PCGS is more conservative with the Clad IKE's than NGC. Clad IKE's also appear to graded on a different scale than Silver IKE's. I've seen some MS65 and MS66 Silver IKE's that would not top MS63 as Clad coins. If you can believe it, this one, got an MS65! I sent it back for a regrade and they awarded it an MS64. :headbang: BTW, here's a couple of recent clad regrade submissions to look at: .. ..
Hey guy's great info on this thread but I'm sure y'all know that!! I just bought a bicentennial 3-pack of the 1976 and it's really nice, I got it for around $15 and change delivered so I feel more than alright about that. Can anyone tell me if there are any errors on the 76' Ike that I should keep an eye out for? Also, what other years can I get them Ike's in silver? Again, my hat is off to all you Ike enthusiasts.
Fret: Ikes are available in silver-clad from '71-s to '76-s in Proof and MS. The Red Book cites the two varieties of '76 silver-clad Ikes: 1976 V2 and 1976-S V1 MS and 1976-S V2 Proof. I'm currently working on an silver-clad Ike set that will included all of the Silver Ikes: one of each grade from PCGS MS 65 to MS 69 and Proof 65 to Proof 69, all "S" mintmark. Not working on getting varieties like DDO, toners or errors. This will comprise 50 coins across these grades to complete. This is my Showcase set for them on PCGS: Silver SF Ike Dollars 1971-1974 & 1976 [no pics yet] Congrats on the 3-piece Bi-cent Proof set. Those are nice and $15 is not too bad. You might find them anywhere from $6 to $25 and in OGP. There's a fair amount of them out there and easy to pick up off ebay auctions.
TC, Do you have the reverse image also? Is this your coin? Looks like a TeleTrade image based on the file name. To me, their pics typically do not have enough detail for close up photographic inspection of the coin. The lighting always seems flat or imbalanced, so you have to look really hard for the pros and cons of any coin they image. Without the reverse to look at, I'll guess NGC MS64, which I feel may be too high with the amount of marks on the obverse. I've seen similar '72 Ikes by NGC at MS63 with this amount of marks. This coin also looks ever so slightly struck off center and weak around the "I" in Liberty in the 11 o'clock region, but it has the full leg of the "R" so it's not a worn die state (I think)... The 'bag marks' don't distract that much for me to say they may have gone MS64 on this.
It is not my coin, yet...but I am thinking of buying it. It is from an online seller (not an auction). TC
http://i40.tinypic.com/2jdrpci.jpg Its not in amazing condition and it isn't a rare Ike but it is one of the few I have.
TC: I see you uploaded the reverse of that 72... So you did see the fingerprint on the reverse, around 9 o'clock position didn't you? I have come to be be very irritated by prints on slabbed coins. I almost find it irresponsible to slab them in my opinion. Not sure how the TPGs think of them but I look at them as problems that linger and detract. I would always worry that the print will become more pronounced or that changes in the environment will slowly effect the coin with an oily print on it. If I were considering this coin, I'd pass on it seeing that. That's just how I feel about such a thing... maybe you could send it to NCS for conservation review and get it reholdered but it's probably not worth it. Just look for another coin without the problems. Just my 2¢
Compare Ike pops to Morgan or Peace pops and you will see the reason for the prices. Few Ikes survived in upper MS states. As a long time Ike collector I have been dealing with this for some time. For those of you interested in learning more about Ikes go to IkeGroup.com. These guys are serious about their Ikes and the site will give collectors a lot of useful info.
Welcome to CT kman! and Welcome to this Ike thread! Take a look back through the pages and you'll find a lot of mention and reference to the IkeGroup here too. :thumb: Would love to see some of your favorites too... so feel free to Post an Ike. :smile
