This is probably the most worn down coin I have. It's really heavy and must have had a lot of use. I'm trying to determine what it is. I'm thinking a farthing, but not sure what year. It is wider than the 1807 Farthing I have. That's all I know. Any guesses? Many thanks in advance (I know I'm not giving you much to work with)!
Looks like a George I farthing. Check out this site: http://bills-stuff.net/ More specifically this part: http://bills-stuff.net/GB/1714_p1.html guy
Are you sure that couldn't be a cartwheel penny? Its pretty worn, but it looks like a Soho coin with that rim....
Fantastic photos of the most worn British copper I have ever seen in my life. Looks like a George I Farthing to me.
I'm really going to stick my neck out here and say that that based on the photo and the info given, that is NOT a George I farthing. The position of Britannia's arms and the rim around the edge suggests that it was struck in the name of George III at the Soho Mint in Birmingham, probably after 1797. And are you sure it is a farthing? How wide is it?
On second thought, it might be a 1797 penny: http://bills-stuff.net/GB/1760_p1.html#Cpenny Looking on a different computer screen with different lighting, I must reconsider my opinion. The diameter of the coin would easily distinguish the two. guy
Yeah, but isn't it fun to try and figure out what it is without all the information that could have been provided?:kewl:
Agree. That's why I enjoy the study of Ancient coins. Most times, one has only partial information to determine the "when, where, why, and who's" of a coin. guy
