Is it possible you may not have an up to date understanding of numismatic market dynamics?

Start at price point evaluation, and just as a suggestion, consider that the present TPGs and 4PGs (yes, plural) have a common price point floor the public uses: Greysheet publications and auctions.

What is your vision of another Grading company gaining market acceptance? Would you participate using your personal finances based on a more the merrier concept?

Remember, in thinking about the another Grading company, the evaluation is still opinion, not fact, at the present.

When the numismatic market reaches a level of equality of fact, and not opinion, you may have a reasonable discussion point in favor of more is better. I don't think that is probable, without fiduciary oversight, via qualification of any TPG or 4PG evaluator.

Well, the whole point of CAC was a response to the lack of consistency coming from NGC and PCGS. At first it was for John Albanese (one of the founders of both PCGS and NGC), to be able to offer coins to his customers that weren’t “All over the board” in terms of quality and eye appeal. But CAC morphed into something the collecting/dealing world wanted, and they have grown leaps and bounds. It isn’t easy for a coin to gain the CAC seal of approval, either because they are weak for the grade, problem coins, or flat out over-graded.

So yeah if you didn’t know already, the new grading service will be CAC. They will be slabbing coins and priding themselves on consistency and proper grading.

Now, that’s called a different light. I withdraw my previous question.

Not that it matters, but, maybe you shouldn't have. That light is flickering quite a bit

Sort of like somebody taking a lot more CBD than they should.

Thanks for explaining it to me Charley. You are obviously way more intelligent than I am, and you are correct I have absolutely no understanding of the numismatic market. LOL

I never said another TPG would or could survive. However, I think they have every right to try, and the market will decide if they are viable or not. I suppose you would be happy with only one TPG. That would work out well, monopolies always do...

And yes I knew they were referring to CAC, and if it really does come to fruition I believe they will be very successful. They may even push PCGS off the top of the mountain.

Anyone have a clue what their slabs will look like, and will CAC bean their slabs?

    Inquiring minds . . . .

To bean or not to bean. Honestly, I don't see a conflict. I think they will. The gold bean is out for them though if they also grade it, make sense?

I’ve seen a prototype of their holder. But not a final version.

Wouldn't ALL their slabs automatically be "beaned"?

I'd have to agree. Even with a Chinese Wall, I doubt there would be much credibility with collectors. We'll see how it goes. Frankly, I can't tell from the current state of knowledge as related in this thread what the connection between CAC and the new TPG may be

The obvious business questions would be along the lines of:

    - What is the startup cost?
    - How much operating expense and time is projected until break-even?
    - What is/are the "hooks" to attract the initially-targeted audience to take a chance on a new player?
    - Who will be the initially-targeted clientele?

I could go on but why beat a poor nag?

BTW, I am certainly not part of the targeted client list. I'm also not inclined by nature to be a "first mover" on anything. So, I will just wait and see where this goes.

Tomorrow, I'm going to a sizable local coin show where I will ask dealers and others what they've heard about this. Ditto at next Wednesday's LCC meeting.

Not necessarily, they wouldn't necessarily buy every coin they're offering a grade on. Separate business models in grading and beaning. Beaning means they like it at the grade enough to buy it, as I understand that. It doesn't just mean the grade in their opinion is accurate.

That might actually be a good thing considering how ultra slow both services are and have been for almost 2 years.

Wonder if they’ll keep it to accepted members only like cac. I’m a member and can submit as far as I still know. Haven’t in a few years

I wonder if they will do world and US, since I believe CAC only currently does US. Any insight on that around the rumor mill @C-B-D ?
