I call this the "UFO Thaler". Question is, is it familiar to anyone as to date, country, coin type, or even if it is genuine? An oddity for sure...all I have are these photos, but sure wish I had the coin!

    Thanks for any info...

Thanks for the link. Its good to know it is real...wish I could remember from where I grabbed the original images, though I know it was off some web site. Wonder if anyone has investigated period writings, religious or otherwise, from which the "idea" for this jeton came from. As a historian of sorts, and an archeologist, my guess is the idea was taken from a writing or illustration already in existence...I'd wager the "UFO" was 'pirated' right off such an illustration. Some time spent in libraries, museums and/or monasteries might pay off. Knowing where and/or by whom, such jetons were usually made, would likely lead to probable sources for research. Could lead to an educational guess of them using the Ezekiel wheel story, or a it being created from a true local UFO sighting someplace...which was more than likely recorded in some form. Fun to ponder.

    Thanks for posting!! Neat...

Why am I not surprised that Bresset would possess this?

    Interesting jeton...

I believe that the translation cited in the article only references the first side of the coin shown, and that the other side translates to more...

But I don't personally think it depicts any kind of alien ship or Ezekiel wheel... of course, by definition, it is indeed a UFO :)

Has anyone tried translating the other side? I did... and I have my own guess what the object might be too :)

Ah, this is an interesting connection to what it actually depicts. Makes sense they'd draw from legends and stories for what to put on these jetons. There is usually a logical explanation. In tracing everything back to an original source, many believe even the wierdest legends have their story based on some actual event...now we just have to determine what was in the sky for Numa to cure the plague with. OK, back to square one.
Problem with the UFO debate, there is plenty of convincing circumstantial evidence (muddied by plenty of kookiness), and any reported physical evidence there ever was in recent times was carted away under armed guard by Big Brother who typically left behind nothing but dire threats to keep silent, no doubt under the premise that the rabble are too stupid and would be too scared to know any truth. The ancients handled this sort of thing quite well within their cultural-historical context; all this stuff was just the God(s) doing their thing, and of course made great story telling.
Thanks for the info submitted so far on the coin/jeton.

From my limited knowledge, many coins stamped with Latin often used standard/period abbreviations for words/names, etc...writing space was very limited on these things! If anyone knows enough Latin and how it was variously abbreviated, please share it.

At second glance, I'm noticing after perusing lots of other jetons of the same era that there seems to be a recurring theme dealing with rain, clouds, plants, and nature...

    Found this theoretical translation:

OPPORTUNUS ADEST HAC PER TE AVCTA COLAM
Lisäämällä jokaisen kirjaimen vanhan äänteen saamme "oepepe oeer te vaenva esaeteeieste, heaece peierteeiae veceteae ceoeelaeem" mikä on suomi-latina kieltä.
Adding each letter of the old sound may get "oepepe øer you vaenva esaeteeieste, heaece peierteeiae veceteae ceoeelaeem" which is Finnish, Latin languages.

    Cool, thanks. :thumb:

The "Chambre Des Comptes De Normandie" pictured in the thread a cool jeton.

Also, I notice that it looks like Bressett isn't the only one that possesses that specific "UFO" jeton...
