Oh my God, this was not supposed to be a coin I'd grow attached to. Strictly supposed to be a business transaction, yet another bit of gold to my portfolio. But I can't help falling in love with it no matter how hard I try not to. Without a doubt one of the most beautiful vintage gold coins I've ever held.

Love those roosters! Far too interesting to just be bullion.

Well, I kind of came about it from the other direction - I fell in love with the design long before I ever owned one :)

There are very attractive sovereign size gold coins available at bullion prices. This is an older acquisition from Karl Stephens many years ago for $70.

Australia, George V, sovereign, 1919, Perth mint.

Too nice to be just bullion. Slab it?

Chaplain used the same image of Marianne on the medals he designed for the Paris Expo of 1900. See the pics below. There was a huge variety of these. The main difference was the name inscription on the reverse. The names could refer to famous people, expo sponsors and expo booth holders. For the medal in the pics, I’m not sure if E. Jolibois was the French politician and philosopher who died in 1896 or the prominent publisher who was active during 1900.

In addition to the bronze medal shown here, there were also silver- and gold-plated versions. The medals are 63-64 mm (2.5 inches) in diameter

The France Marianne-Rooster coin appeared on a French 1915 World War One poster:

The poster shows a French gold coin attacking a German soldier.
It was designed by Abel Faivre in 1915 and reads:
"Pour la France VERSEZ VOTRE OR" (For France, donate your gold)
"L'Or Combat Pour La Victoire" (The gold fights for Victory)

A work of art becomes part of another work of art.
