My goal at first was to but raw Morgans in the best condition i could find, and then i wanted to send them to Ngc are Pcgs and hope they would grade ms-65 and higher, it was alot harder than expected so now i just buy them graded, so now in order to turn a profit it will take much longer to do so. Unless silver climbs to $50.00 bucks an ounce by the fall of 2011 like some are predicting, i sure don't see this happening.
I think it'll be a fun goal to work on. I've been doing something similar myself, only I've been building a complete type set of slabbed toners. The 7070 was fun, but really lacks in completeness. I doubt I'll ever finish, but it's a project that will keep me busy for the next 50 years or so. Have fun! Guy~
Sounds like a nice idea. Everyone has their own tastes of what they collect, and how they collect. With the exception of proof sets from the Mint, if I see something I like, and the price is right, I get it. I like a variety of coins in my collection. Good luck, and make sure you post pics as you acquire your coins.
Have fun & post the coins here every one or two months. FYI, all the 20th Century type coins can be gotten in proof except maybe the Peace dollar & standing liberty quarter.
I would like to echo what Leadfoot said to advise to be patient. Give some thought as to what you are buying and your comfort level in each type. I think it is extremely hard to know about every coin before you buy it, but there are sure a lot of experts in various series you can ask first. Also, don't be afraid to ask an opinion of a few on here before you plop down your cash. Use the PM feature if you're worried someone will steal it away. I found this article to be helpful in things to consider as you build your type set: http://www.ivyleaguecoin.com/ustypesetoptions.html As you go after earlier type coins, the price is going to rise considerably to find nice examples. And so, the risk goes up that you'll buy something you'll regret later as you acquire more knowledge. So, again, go slow and buy quality - no matter what the grade. Good luck and have fun!
I have a Whitman Classic Album - United States Type Set - Small Coins. Whitman #9434 It's actually a bit scarce. But if contains three pages and goes from half-cents to quarters. It puts the Dansco 7070 typeset album to shame. For example, there are 8 different types of half-dimes in this album. It would cost many thousands of dollars to just fill up this album with G/VG coins. You will probably need to define what you mean by "Type" But CRAP - I wish I were 20 again and had your plan. Best of luck!
Zach, if you are going for all slabbed coins, check out the NGC Registry. You can enter your coins in the set, and show them to other collectors. It also serves as a great checklist to help you track how far you are. For the $1 type set, you can see my set-in-progress here: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=88666 If you want to do the whole "7070" set slabbed, the NGC registry has that as well. You can see mine here. I'm going for a very unique idea, and getting all prooflike coins: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=98228
Holy cow, thanks for all the replies the thread nearly doubled while I was at work. I think I'm going to go with NGC graded coins, no particular reasoning. I picked up this 1958 NGC MS-65 Roosevelt today. I bought it case I enjoyed it very much. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140396683405&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I've got a type coin set (all raw) from the 20th century. Have broken in the 1800'and its significantly more expensive. Good luck.
Hi, Zach! I just registered this evening. I'm also a member of the NGC forum, CoinsAreFun and VAMWorld. If you're going to concentrate on NGC slabs, I assume that you have access to the NGC Census to use as a reference guide for this project. In one of your earlier posts, you mentioned working on dollar coins. Do you have a Sacagawea? I have 9 2007-P NGC MS68 business strikes in my collection. NGC has only graded 44 of them (1 higher), and 14 were from my submission. If you're interested, send me a PM and we can discuss the details. Chris PS. I don't know if this is allowed on this forum, but I'm sure someone will let me know if it isn't. If so, please accept my apology.
Hello everyone, While reading the OP comments I was thinking, as collectors, type sets in holders are: 1. Good to show off 2. Great for learning to grade 3. Protect your coins 4. Help with selling, due to authenticity. Just my opinion. Oh and so you know I have never bought a coin in a slab. Don't like them too big, but do make cents as well. Oh Chris, Welcome to CT and good luck, let us know how it goes! Regards, Stan
Yep since your looking at a graded set go for the NGC registry as you can put PCGS and NGC coins in it so you don't have to limit it. Good luck, it will be fun!
Thanks so much, I can't wait till I get to the nickels. I might go for them after i finish up the dollars. The buffalo + liberty are absolutely beautiful coins. Picked up a 2005-S SACAGAWEA $1 NGC PF 69
Are there any highly recommended websites that sell various coins for pretty decent prices. I have a feeling I wont be able to find all the coins I need from the local dealer. *Seaport Coins in Toms River*
