Have been looking for a replacement for a coin I damaged cleaning. It is a quite common coin but it kept eluding me until Friday when I found it at H&B. Haven't received it yet, but needless to say I am looking very much forward to it. Claudius II Gothicus; 268-270 AD, Rome, Antoninianus, 3.63g. RIC-18, Cunetio-1964 (20 spec.), C-21. Would like to know what you do with damaged coins? Put them away in a box where you can hardly see them? recycle?
The HB coin pics show what I believe to be tooling marks all over the surfaces. Curious as to why you decided to buy this one?
Yes, I am aware of those marks. Nevertheless, it is the first time in many many months that I saw one of this type for sale and I really wanted a replacement. You have no idea how hard I searched for one. For sure, it is much better than the one I damaged, with the lettering on the reverse all there. Until a better one shows up, I am satisfied with this one.
Depends on the coin, rarity, degree of damage, etc. I might keep it (sometimes to remind me what not to do), or I might pass it on.

I guess they sort them for various types/countries and to add/start a world collection. Break and sell on ebay perhaps? They never say why, but the same people often buy bulk. I've got a smaller lot up at the moment .6KG - not as impressive
