I have to side with MPC here. Not concerning neg feedback however. I feel that if the seller had wanted to keep you as a steady customer he should have eaten the $3.50 and done the right thing. As far as security goes, that is not as big a deal, bring a friend along, period.

If it was me I would not buy from him again unless he were willing to meet. And $3.50 for s&h in the same town? Couldn't he of at least lowered the price? I understand the S&H was known however this is someone he (the seller) should of realized was close buy and possibly could of got some off ebay sales from. I think the seller made a huge mistake, IMHO

    Stan

Obviously he just wanted the extra money from the shipping and handling. It doesn't cost $3.50 to ship a coin to another house in your town.

Unfortunately the seller does not know what good customer service is.

If it was me, I would have done it. That is how you get off site sales:kewl: and avoid the ridiculous ebay fees.

Concerning this, he already knows his address unless he has a pots office box...

You guys got to think outside your fairy tale worlds... bring a friend along? come on... that's not insurance. Seriously, folks, you do not know what you could be walking into with a complete stranger! Just because it's your hometown and you both happen to be there at the same point in time doesn't absolve risks. Think about this long and hard, the world is not that kindly of a place, even in your small town and for a few bucks. Lest we even remind ourselves that this is eBay and the myriad scams and phonies out there trying to rip off people over coins, discussed here ad nauseum, should be illustration enough of the potential problems that might arise.

I thought the intimacy of a small town would exclude any worry of security. We've probably passed each a hundred times on the street or at the supermarket. If it was Chicago or Indianapolis I wouldn't have even bothered. I guess Mayberry doesn't exist any more.

I don't agree with the shipping and handling. I know how to play the game. I don't mind paying the high shipping charges when I pay 3.50 for a silver half. I wouldn't have paid more. If shipping was a buck, I would have paid up to six dollars for it.

I think shipping charges should be just for shipping, not a padding to insure his profit. What if I paid 7.00 for it, plus 3.50 for s&h? Would it be different then?

No, probably some unknown dude he bought them from off of eBay who also happens live five minutes drive across their small town. :computer:

Ebay is one of the few auctions where the sellers bears all the costs of listing and commissions. In most auctions, the buyer pays a premium on top of the cost of the item, plus shipping. Many eBay sellers try to recover some of the costs with high S&H fees.

Maybe he does a really really good job of packing and uses uber expensive packing materials and really values his time handling products... you don't know until you receive the 0.10¢ envelope with the coin in a scummy poly flip stapled dangerously close to the coin and shoved in the mail with a .44¢ postage stamp that gets blasted through a USPS automatic postal sort machine at high rates of speed, crushed and delivered to your mail box by a smiling postal carrier.:mouth:

There are two points here. One if it is a small seller, yes the handling fees do count, if it is someone who is running a business, then I do not think it does. Please correct me if I am wrong, but aren't supplies tax deductible for business owners? However that would mean they are not ripping the U.S. Government off buy declaring their profits...I might have just answered that myself..lol

I still feel the seller lost a potential off site buyer:rolleyes:

I'll let you know when I get it. I know it's gotta go thru the P.O. sorting center located in the next town over before it gets to me.

All someone has to do is look at the upper left corner of a package to get your address. If security is what you're looking for it would make MORE sense to meet someone in person so they would NOT have your address. Sure, some people use a PO Box or business address, but they are in the minority if the 1000's of packages I've received from ebay buys are any indication.

Why so harsh? First it was the negative feedback idea you spewed out and now it's entirely avoiding future sales and interaction, with a supposed neighbor??? What gives Rusty? Do you even heed your own advice within the same thread?

As it was suggested, follow the auction details this time, play by the auction rules agreed upon by bidding prior to inquiring with the Seller about special conditions like local pick up and try to foster a future local working relationship in the future if so desired. Shutting down completely and boycotting a Seller because you disagree with the terms blindly agreed upon by the stance of the buyer in this situation is pure folly.

Please stick to the terms of this transaction and the OP, not hypotheticals of what you 'would do'... the situation is already in play and the opportunity of getting to know a neighbor is well under way, why ruin it before it's even off the ground.
