2016-D South Carolina State Quarter and 1995-D Penny Hello friends! Looking for your opinions....again. I found what appears to be a gouge out of the coin under the date (2016) and above Lincolns head on the reverse of the penny. Quarter - The gouge goes under the date with the top of the date undisturbed. Is this considered a strike through or prestrike planchet damage (my own term)? There is also a smaller gouge under LINA in South Carolina as well. Penny - On the penny there appears to be a piece of something (struck through?) above Lincolns head on the reverse. I call it the Fist of Freedom! Your opinions are greatly appreciated, as always.
Your quarter looks like a post mint damage gouge on an incuse date. It has raised metal at the edges of the gouge.
I originally thought PMD. Wouldn't the numbers be damaged as well? The tops of the numbers are rounded with no damage yet the gouge passes them anyway, leading me to believe the gouge happened before being struck by the die. West of the 6 you can see what looks like part of the gouge set back down in the groove.
Oh my goodness! So sorry. I looked at it again and the date IS incuse! Your eyes are so much better then mine! Didn't even know there was such a thing until you mentioned it. Thank you.
