Here is a silver coin that I purchased recently. I'm trying to dig to figure out all I can about the coin and what it represents.

    italyfront.png italyback.png

It's Carlo I di Spagna (Carlo V, Sacro Romano Impero - King of Naples and Sicily) (1516-1554)

I've been looking through Numista, Coinarchives.com, acsearch.info, Numisbids.com and Numismatics.org but can't find an exact match.

    I think it's a Tari, but I'm not positive.

The closest I've found is a
Several of these mention MIR 135 as a reference. Is this available anywhere online?

    Best I can read it's:
Obverse:Laureate head of Charles V to right LVS V ROMANO IMP
Reverse:Crowned double-headed eagle with a crowned coat of arms on breast RARAG VTR IVS

On most of the Tari I see the reverse has "RARAGO" but this coin is "RARAG" (no "O").

Has anyone ever seen this coin? Can you provide any insight into what the lettering on obverse/reverse represents? or a pointer to other threads that go deep on the Carlo series?

    thank you.

Currently watching the Borgias ShowTime series on Netflix...........alarmingly, they show no coins...........I'll stand in the corner.

It's probably for the better. Contemporary shows like that are usually a huge letdown when coins are shown as they are usually some blatantly fake tokens that look like they came from a gift shop at Disneyland.

thank you-similar but not 100% like the others. It seems that Carlo is on quite a few coins… this series might be a new passion project…

Coins from this era of Southern Italy and Sicily are rare. However, much older Roman coins from that same region are very common.

I'm looking for a book that has researched them... any recommendations?

In English it might be hard. If you can read Italian there will be books that cover this era. Italians are big into coin collecting and they have a very long history.

This is a book in Italian that should help you "Monete e Zecche Medeievali Italiane dal Sec. VII al Sec. XV." Torino (Turin) 1992. Written by Elio Biaggi.

I personally collect Italian and Italian States coins from 1700 to 1900 and I use the "Gigante Catalogo Nazionale delle Monete Italiane Dal '700 All'Euro" Published every year by Fabio Gigante. It's in Italian and far better than any English language books.
