I like the coins, but information and posts are rarer than Saints. I do want to get a few of them in coming months.
I’ve bought and sold quite a few $20s. I’d like to have a few in my safe again. What I’d really like is a high relief Saint
Would agree on that, its easier and less expensive on the Saint side and for obvious reasons there not as old and you can find them in the 64-66 range very easily in comparison.
Two good sources of information on Liberty Double Eagles are David Bowers book which also covers Saint-Gaudens DEs (the Red Book by Whitman)...and a very expensive book by Bowers called "U. S. Liberty Head $20 Double Eagles: The Gilded Age of Coinage." It's a hardcover book and pretty pricey if you can find it.
Thanks for the info on the books, have you converted those coins yet that you were gifted by Mom and Dad ?
I tracked the AU-58's assiduosly for years....was just about to drop below $10K when you had the pandemic rise. Closer to $12K now.
yeah I see that. I could have bought a 63-64 for $18-20 a few years back. Would have been a good investment.
If I do it, let's assume I get about $3,400 for the 2 coins. What year/condition should I consider ? I'm not interested in 2 circulated worn pieces. Rather get 1 nice one. Have to do some research on the common or semi-common years/mintmarks and which ones I can get in MS-65 or higher.
the easy answer is a 1904 very common in high grades if you scan the popular websites such as APMEX, Liberty coin and LCR as a good selection but I have not bought from them yet, so not sure how good they are, going to look for my next GOLD purchase right now and I will let you know what I find, as far as condition goes I would for sure consider A/U 53 - 58 many liberties I have found dont have M/S grades or 61 -62 which I would not recommend many are pretty scratched up and I wouldn't consider them basically they have a little more luster but who cares if it not an attractive coin, will go hunting right now and let you know what I find
shot around a little at APMEX found a 1900 M/S 65 for $5779 and a lot of 1904,s in M/S 65 in the 4 - 5 K range.
Your best investment value probably would be in a nice 1904, or if found at a comparable price, a 1900 or older, in MS62 grade, preferably without extensive bag marks and "rub"! The last link shown below is a "better date" and condition 1907-S D.E., offered at ~C.D.N. "Grey Sheet". One grade above has an ~$2000 greater wholesale value! https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...=0&_odkw=20+gold+double+eagle+ms+65&_osacat=0 https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...=20+liberty+gold+double+eagle+ms+65&_osacat=0 https://www.ebay.com/itm/125480400026?hash=item1d3736f49a:g:cbQAAOSwPONjBmY4&amdata=enc:AQAHAAAA8MheV3Gzj33mePTK3rAHgrCT0/t52lYlxBLU/huf7wEn6KjytC2CFhiCkuZ0hsrw/sRXqdLp1YG/MfW48+gq1FjxxT051A9dkmrWKty7UfWJ1SrRBLpG2ITZQ6sQDRQsFRsll1VxmCZnz96vdGbnUUtU5FLOKtVHqswKBW/JSOzVHRW3fO23jj1EZnSu8jIFo7CkfX8LVs6hOaPhuI6FBLwHwhUpD8xN1uzNqyExTxC/83QvVZfL4xBuzCdgLZFEDCK1S9QD/0FPbXiIOXu19HD97cTCF6ZdSVipV7qVseytc7xz88J7fxvEcoZs+wiqVg==|tkp:Bk9SR5CKve7tYA
Wow, the price really jumps for the Liberty commons relative to the Saint common years, huh ? Yeah, the 1904 is always there....surprised the 65 grade costs that much. Maybe I'll look for a really nice 1800's Liberty in AU-58.
Thanks IM, ....what do you think about going down to the AU-58 level to get an older coin from the 1800's ? BTW...I know there are about 3.9 million known survivors of Saint-Gaudens DEs...how many is the total for ALL Liberty DEs ?
