The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." Religion is a non-specific term. The First Amendment did not state "an establishment of a specific religion." No matter how ambiguous you try to make the motto seem, religion is religion, and the Constitution prohibits(at least should prohibit) its establishment.

Interesting take, Teddy. I really wanted you to be on the quarter for the National Parks...I guess that would have led to some irony!

Is the following related? It's something I feel about the saying of the Lord's Prayer at the end of some AA meetings. Even though AA purports to be unaffiliated to any religion, doesn't it give the newcomer the wrong impression when a group then closes with the collective chanting of the teachings of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount? Shouldn't we as a Country be concerned with the appearance of religious endorsement even if most Americans were to believe that there is successful separation?

Like it or not, religion is the basis of all social order. No, I am anything but a " Church Person ". But the fact is that religion is the basis of all social order.

I always assumed money was the basis. At least thats what I got from politicians the past 2000 years or so.

    I have a god, but I don't have a religion.
Atheists purport no god at all, thereby barring all religions.
This thread almost qualifies for the PRWE forum.

I think it would be a mistake to confuse religion with Church. Church seems to try to define religion. But what would I know.

What I think is often different than what I feel. I try to not make my decisions based on feelings, since feelings seem to have more in common with digestion than principles.

It certainly qualifies. And I don't think it has crossed the line yet. But I can see this thread getting shut down if it strays from the path its on now.

The founders were very concerned about the establishment of a specific federal/state religion.

They wanted to avoid the Church of England(as well as many other European countries) scenario where the state and church were intertwined. This was their concern about the central government of the United States, this limitation applies to the Congress of the United States not to other state or local entities.

Whatever their specific concerns of the day, the founders had the foresight to create a timeless document. The founders chose their wording carefully, and in this case they chose the very non-specific word "religion."

It certainly isn't supportive of Hindus, Pagans, athiests, and Buddists. Everyone knows to exactly which God it's referring so it's really excluding a wide swath of Americans and foreigners. It is offensive to have this on coinage on many levels.

One of the most apropos coins I've ever gotten was a bicentennial quarter that has a clipped planchet and clearly states "In God We Rust". It seems this process started righht about the time the coins were adulterated but then that's no doubt coincidence.

The motto is mandated on the coins by Congress. There is simply no chance that a majority of politicians would vote to remove this motto which obviously refers to a Christian deity when 80% of the voters would be in uproar. It is a remarkable embarassment that we will have to live with indefinitely.

The founders would simply be appalled.

Rollins says that the old Gods die if no one worships them. Just mentioning their name allows them to open their eyes. Even poor old Pan is on life support now days and Atum no longer can see the sun.

    Thor is not amused.
