alright so i picked this up at probably one of the last coin shops within 30 miles i put off going to. it was in a 50% off bin with a few other large cents that were either damaged or heavily worn. i know theres almost no details except the outline on the obverse and the fraction on the reverse. after nearly blinding myself looking for any part of the date i think it maybe a 1797. with a piece this worn do i just save it as is or attempt to reveal a little more of the date at least? for what its worth i believe theres a die crack going thru the numerator.
im most def keeping it. who can say they get a draped bust for 2.50 this day and age. just wish it was a little more identifyable.
I'd keep the silly thing. I used to have one like that; BARELY identifiable by type. I wonder what the heck I did with it? Oh well...
there was a 1810 classic head in there i looked at for a while. it was ag but 20 seemed a little high and they werent gonna budge on prices so i left it. actually now that i check my book id say maybe more like F2
I don't think so. Numerator is too high and the crack on the 166 goes through the center of the numerator comes out the lower right foot of the 1 and drops down through the last 0. That is nothing like this coin. What appears to be a crack on this one is going through the top of the 1. I don't know what it IS but it isn't 166.
I can't say for sure, but this looks really close to this one. Of course I can't say for sure. And for 2.50 it is a keeper.
i can't see the outline on the obverse in the pic, but i'm sure it's there. nice coin! :thumb: i love the old, worn down coins. so much more of a history and story to them. if only coins could talk...
well i took around 2 dozen more pics after placing it in a airtite. ive come to the conclusion this camera stinks! anyway since none of these pics can give the details i see ive got to agree with the S166.
Mark, that is the 166 again and it can't be that one, the crack is going through the wrong location on the 1. I see th crack as going through the very top of the 1 and then continuing on into the ribbon on the right. On the 166 it goes through th middle of the 1, comes out the right foot of the 1, down to the end of the fraction bar and then on down to the 0. I keep wondering if the "crack" through the 1 might be the clashmarks seen on 234 and 235.
For what it's worth, i think it's off center on the reverse. The ribbons and the fraction are just too high.
Look at the second picture posted. It looks to me it enters the left top and exits the right foot. See my weak attempt at drawing the one(blue) and the crack(yellow).
