I wonder how many people found these in their box of Cheerios and threw them into a drawer in their kitchen and forgotten about.
I have never seen an official count of how many pattern dollars were made. Supposedly 5500 were given away in Cheerios boxes but no where near that many have been graded. It's my understanding that those patterns were accidentally sent in to be packaged in the Cheerios giveaway boxes and that none of the rest (assuming there were plenty of extras) were put into circulation...because they didn't actually go into circulation until the official release of the Sacagawea dollars, and those were proper 2000 P business strikes. I'm guessing either at the Mint and/or somewhere at the General Mills headquarters is a big old sack or two of pattern Sac dollars...!
Yes there were 5500 Cheerios dollars, and we know that not all of them were the prototype reverse. I just used 5000 as a round figure, and almost certainly too high. Which then falls under the part where I said that if any of the conditions weren't true that the odds get a lot worse. So 5,000 would be best case and it is getting worse from there, a lot worse.
Kind of reminds me when CP3O was breaking down the odds of success in one of the Star Wars movies! My main motivation for getting the dollar coins is to carve hobo nickels with. Checking for the Cheerio dollar and the speared eagle is a side project. I would prefer to get a box of SBA dollars if I could choose. Its fun searching for them! I use a microscope to get a good look. When I do get some from the bank I am getting between 1,000-1,400. Dated Buffalo nickels are approaching a dollar each- so the dollar coin is a good replacement. Thanks for breaking down all the odds! I did carve a hobo out of a three legged nickel (in rough shape) once accidently and I dont want to repeat that mistake with a dollar coin lol.
I purshased a circulated Cheerios from a person that stated he searched 25,000 coins to find one. I guess he was lucky.
I recently did a count of graded Cheerios dollars (except ICG which is too complicated). I count about 200 graded. Crossovers lowers the count a bit. I know of four cross overs and I am currently trying to get a couple more crossed.
Lucky? That's $25,000 dollars. He could just purchased a few already attributed instead of acquiring all those to find one.. Seems a bit foolish
5,503,200,000 pennies minted in 2000. Only ten million were put in Cheerios packages. Has to be worth at least a dollar. A dollar will not buy much anymore. Not even a quart of gas or a loaf of good quality bread.
