Thanks to @Pickin and Grinin 's little push in another thread, I have decided to cut out and conserve the 9 coins from the 1953 Royal Mint Set. Overall, they are in pretty good uncirculated condition with some haze and a bit of toning on the copper pieces. This first round will consist of only a distilled water soak/rinse with a pat dry. Changing water every coin. First the set in the package and then I will post each coin when first cut out and then with a water soak (about 10 minutes each). Feel free to share your own of the same type and any information on the series!
I did a set that came from Singapore sent to me by JeffC as a gift ...I'm guessing youre seeing a lite power like film from the plastic...Acetone did the trick removed everything coins look new.
I am a fan of starting light. Distilled water should be the first attempt at restoration. Followed by a wet rag and hot tap water.
I think that's where we are headed on these larger coins, the water is helping but I suspect the acetone will be the finisher.
Cannot wait to see them....the set I did had no pvc damage but a very lite whitish power...I soaked them a few minutes allowed them to dry on a micro fiber cloth and they poped.
GB 3 Pence KM#886 this nickel brass coin had very little white film. Trying to be consistent on the photos but the color seems a bit greener on the after photos....
The coppers are getting a longer soak. I am not worried about acetone on the copper and might try the farthing first.
I liked how the copper finished its a richer color of red. The others were very dull looking and the acetone made them pop. I don't believe that youll be disappointed with the results.
The after water didn't do much on the coppers so just going to post the before shots. GB one Penny KM#883 GB 1/2 Penny KM#882 GB Farthing (1/4 penny) KM#881
