No I do believe as well seen a family loose a parent or aunt/ uncle who may had a jar,can ,what ever full of coins. No concerns about whats in the container as they arent collectors. Take them to the bank dump them in a coin counter...and cashing in. They are just clueless as to certain valuables...as it isnt in their wheelhouse.
Reminds me of those stories where people save up pennies for 50 years and simply cash them in, like the guy that dumped over $10K worth of cents into a Coinstar machine in 2004. Would be a roll searcher's dream to be able to buy that wheat/memorial motherload at face value .
Sometimes they don't even look in such kinds of jars and containers of deceased family members. In October 2018, some elderly neighbors a couple of blocks away had died. The family was throwing out items and boxes into a dumpster sight unseen that were still unpacked from when the now-deceased neighbors moved to the house in 1996. Well, there was a small box full of nick nacks that hadn't been opened since 1990. Within said box was a smaller box for a coffee mug. I opened it and discovered about $5 in pocket change. Being it was essentially a 30-year-old time capsule, I saved the coins in the box as found and still have them.
This sort of story is very often played out just as you posted. IDK if its the schock of the loss...or just wanting to get it done and move on with their lives. Ive told this story several times...as a child living in a row home in Baltimore our neighbors were these two old ladies. They loved me would watch me to give mum a break...let me crawl up in the coal chute to pullit down for them good memories they were very nice to be around They were like family. One of the ladies had a brother my mum and father believed him to be lower class or poorer ...my dad worked in a bank ...he wore a suit every day to work...his old suitschevgive to the lady for her brother to wear. Well the man passed...in fact was layed out in one of my fathers old suits. When they went though his old row home...they found old coffee and tobacco cans filled with cash! Like 60 /70 $ thousand dollars. Care to guess what lets say 65 k in 1959 money was actually worth? In todays money.... One never knows... and in my years I have seen this story as yours over and over.....again.
