I have a personal cut off date. Anything minted before me (1959) goes into the oddball box. These days the occasional wheat cent… But mostly nickels these days……. This one showed up in the pocket change today. Almost makes me feel a nickel poorer because I can’t spend it!

Nice looking nickel. Even wear and no distracting scratches or hits.

Mint issued coins really increased in 1964 so I do basically the same as you but I throw anything 1963 or lower into it, but silver goes to 1964.

My cutoff is anything without A depiction of lady liberty on it. If it’s got a dead president on it it’s junk silver or spend. I do toss Wheaties in a drawer too

My keep and save box varies by denomination.

1964 and earlier for halves, quarters & dimes, for obvious reasons.

1950 and earlier for nickels, just because.

1958 and earlier for cents. Gotta love my wheaties..

Dollar coins I basically keep them all since it's rare that I get any. Kind of just forced savings since the itty-bitty dollars have virtually NAV.

I like anything Silver Pre-1964. Colonials also (copper, Sillver).

I assume a nickel with an Indian man on the obverse is still fair game, but a half with non-President Ben is still junk? ;)

Buffaloes I have a box of. Just fun stuff. For kids etc. franklin goes with JFK. Junk silver. Unless it’s high ms and I can sell for something. Me I love my busty lady halves.

Yeah, me, too -- but I still haven't found one of those in a CoinStar reject slot. A bank teller did show me one, once, that a convenience store guy had deposited at face value.

I don’t think I’ve gotten a silver coin in change of any type in 7-8 years. They’re just not around by me

Can I ask a serious question?
Why would you save this nickel?

Yes it's old, but they made how many million?
I used to save them, kept hundreds of them for years.
I turned them loose back when one of the American coin hunts were going on and anymore I feel like It's circulated, I look them over and take them to my coin club meeting to pass them on to the younger members.

I cleaned up a box and passed on a lot of wheat cents and nickels to make more room for silver coinage.

I collect a particular range of ancient roman coinage, so my cutoff date is 400 AD.

Haven't found any in pocket change yet, but I'll keep looking! :wacky:

If I already have it in my collection, I spend it. Unless it's gold or silver.

No worries. They don’t make cutoffs with a 44” waist.

Because I am one of those guys with OCD or whatever they call it. Don’t even ask me about the buckets of clad pre-1999 quarters I have in my shop, garage, closet, etc.

My cutoff date? 2100. If I live until then, please, please, please cut me off.
