Every once in awhile, I come across coins with the identification/advertisment of "Lowball Registry Set Coin. PCGS has only certified 3 in this grade!" or some other similiar wording. Is this a gimmick? (e.g.First Strike?) About a week ago, I attempted to post this question but it did not get up to a thread (server??). Since, I noticed that only one of the 7 different coins that had the "lowball" associated were still available, I wondered if it was more than just a marketing tool, and truely meant something to those informed. Any input would be appreciated.
That depends on your point of view. Some people think Registry's are a gimmick on their own and it's just a step farther. Instead of a Registry where you look for high grades you try to get the lowest, so it's for the less monetary capable.
Thank you Duke. The coins looked rather worn, but I a worn coin is great if it is still the least "worn" to be known to exist. You provided me enough info to not feel like I missed out on too much. I have to be pretty selective with the coins I choose these days, it is not just that I have so much less money to work with, it is also about having more coins on my "wish list." The older I get, the hungrier I get for some of the older coins (100 plus years).
Would it not have been helpful if the seller had indicated how coins had been graded higher? Or does Low in "lowball" naturally suggests that there are a whole lot more of the given coin in higher grades?
The worst set may well be the bestest set in some eyes. Imagine where the coins have been...who held them.........beauty is truely in the eye of the beholder...or NO HOLDER ROFL sorry was there:stooge:
A Lowball registry set is, as mentioned earlier, a set of coins in the worst possible grades. Some people like coins like that. Funny this thread came up. I am getting ready to send in an 1971 S ike dollar that is no better then a VG. Just for the heck of it.
Registry sets are cool!! Ive got one going on PCGS for Mpc, The competition Is tuff!! But its fun!! and enjoyable
I use mine mostly to keep track of what I have... but the competition is fun. Five of my Mexican sets ranked #1 on NGC for the 2009 competition, but 4 have already been surpassed. I'm working on retaking the #1 spot on those and the others. I'm under no delusion that I have a chance to get the #1 on any of my US sets. Here's my public page on NGC if anybody's interested.
Very Nice indeed!! On my PCGS registry i have 3 completed out of the 15 with several Others with in one or two notes of being completed, The guy in front Of me has deeper pockets then i do which makes it tuff But iam hanging in there and do have several one of kinds that he Doesnt have, So sometimes it,s being at the right place at the Right time!! Heres a link to a set i just finished off: http://www.pcgscurrency.com/SETREGISTRY/alltimeset.aspx?s=1609
