I should have a big pay day comming soon and I want to add a key date to my commem collection. I'm filling up a commem type set book and then plan on putting it in the safety deposit box for 50 years . I need some advice. My local coin guy has been helpful, but he keeps very few in stock. I'm looking to spend between 1,500 and 2,500 in the next few months to get my coin. Which would would you all buy. Isebella Layfeyett or Hudson? I want one that is really nice. OBV I cant get a pcgs hudson in 67 (could buy a new car for same price) but surly out in coin collecting world someone has a nice raw one they would let go for a good price. I'm still prety much a noob with these so any advice from the pros or pictures of what to look for would be helpfull God Bless and happy easter!!!!
I would get the best Isabella or Lafayette for the money, but those are 2 of the 4 commems I want to get in a nice grade, so I'm biased.
I'm leaning that way as well. The hudson is cool, but with 2 other nautical themed coins in the set I am not supper stuck on it. My whole thing is that if I'm going to spend the money to get a nice key date that I should buy the nicest one I can find/ affored. Also I want them raw so it takes away e-bay and other online options because I can't spend 2k on pot meatel form china
I like the Isabella for its historical value, its low mintage, its uniqueness as the first 25 cent commemorative, I think I read it was also the first US coin that featured a royal on it, and the first to feature a real rather than an allegorical female. The Lafeyette is nice because of its large size, its first use of Washington, its reverse is very nicely done IMO, and it is a low mintage coin, I think that commemoratives are not the sort of thing one collects for investment purposes, they seem to have had their bubbles that when they break they plummet. Either would be a nice choice, or you could go for a bunch of the other less premium collected commemoratives. Good luck whatever you decide to do.
If it were me, I'd go for the Lafayette. Why? - Early commen (1900?) - Only silver commem with $1 face value. Like the Isabella quarter, an odd item. Oh, and I didn't select the Isabella because I already have one. Also look at some of the gold commems. But consider the Isabella for the same reasons I chose the Lafayette.
I feel Hudson seem to be the best value. Isabella quarters are common in MS64. You can get MS65 Isabella, MS64 Lafayette, MS66 Hudson. Hudson have the lowest population of the 3. I dont have Isabella or Lafayette, only have raw Hudson.
I would look for a Lafayette Dollar that is either DuVall 1-A or 3-D. These are the more rare die varieties. While most people do not collect the Lafayette by die variety, owning the rarer variety is always a bonus especially since there is very little price difference between the varieties in the current market. For more info on the Lafayette Dollar, please read this thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t50032/
Thanks everyone. I'll post a picture when I buy my coins. Lehigh, Wow thank you again! Congrats btw on Legih making it to the big dance this year!
Thanks, ya know, they played Kansas pretty tough for the first 30 minutes. I was very proud of them and thought they had a good chance to win a game if it had been against a lower ranked team.
Seriously, if it were me, I would get one of the lower mintaged Texas Commem's. Not only are they like the most beautiful design ever! But some of them have a really low mintage, like the 1938's are in the 3000's.
MPCUSA: This one is always the best... Rammer Jammer babey! http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=316&Lot_No=6835 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-646513875893913007# The perosn that said 1938 texas: No sir I had to drive all the way across Texas on my way to watch the Crimson tide roll the long horns in Pasadena In the BCS National Championship this year, and BTW I think the eyes of texas are still crying over colt LOL!!!!!! Is it Gabriel on the back of the coin? And if yes why is he not blowing his horn? I'n all seriousness I have not got a Texas yet, and when I do i'll pick one of those up. This is a really prety coin that seems to be at an aight price. http://cgi.ebay.com/1938-D-TEXAS-CO...mQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item53e07af43c Lehigh: They did really well. It will be cool to see what happens in the comming years with the tournament expanding to 96 teams.
When I think of key's it's the Lafayette, Isabella, Spanish Trail and Hawaiian... and maybe not Isabella if just 3.
Unless you have a compelling reason to set your sights on a particular design/issue, I would suggest that you leave yourself open to the different options that might arise. In other words, instead of limiting your choices at the outset, wait until an especially appealing coin strikes your fancy.
I would always be partial to a Hudson Sesquicentennial Half Dollar. I am originally from there and it has been a coin I would greatly appreciate.
