I acquired over past ten years around 100+ coins/ that were offered by auction firms as avaliable at opening bid/ these ended up "unsold" Here is my first ex. price + fee= $1880 from Heritage Auction Crusader States Robert of Taranto/ Prince of Achaea 1446-64 AV Zecchino ND Achaia
The very narrow section of the hobby I collect in, in the last 20+ years there have been relatively few. Most of them were dogs at best. I either had a nicer piece or it was very expensive.
Normally unsold lots are for a reason - overpriced/nasty. Sometimes worth a shot though. I can only imagine this Syracuse bronze put bidders off due to the flan crack and the incrustation - but for £60+BP, it's pretty nice & a hefty coin to boot. Now if we could come to some conclusions as to denomination that really would be progress!
Here is another from Heritage/ price $1000 with fee. This Mecklenburg-Schwerin AV Quarter Dukat ND (1704) finest graded/ rare.
The post auction lots that I've purchased in the past are ancient or early medieval coins. Yes, coins receiving no bids usually have issues with condition, strike, or allowable minimum bid level, which can vary by consignor. However, such post sales can be a source of decent coins at bargain to reasonable prices. This Roman didrachm attracted no bids in Roma's E-Sale 100, due to multiple lots of this type available, plus the fact that the obverse is off center, the die for the obverse is not the best in workmanship (possibly a Spanish mint coin), and there are a few die breaks on the reverse, at the bottom. On the plus side is a very well centered and struck reverse for this type. At a post auction price of £372.00 after conversion the price I paid was $438.96, not exactly a steal but a good price for this type coin. Roman Republic, Anonymous Didrachm, circa 225-214 BC. From Roma E-Sale100, Lot 920. Crawford 28-3 6.43 grams
That's a very nice coin! Even with the flan crack it is very attractive, with very nice centers. I've seen your coin listed by flan diameter, in this case AE26, but I have seen other auction houses list this type as an AE hemidrachm (see link). https://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotv...9&Lot=35&Val=dd4668781a17a75c1c3db42f3e0cef1f
Just kidding of course with the last - except that to say the AE/AR relationship during this period is hard to nail down - so much of the fine detail is unknown.
Unfortunately, I don't have any coins for this thread, because at the auctions I have so far taken part in, the interesting unsold lots were usually unsold for a valid reason, meaning that either they were in bad condition or they had a ridiculously high price.
In most auctions/ unsolds are poor quality/ have flaws of too high starting price. But I found over 150 that were great buys/ price + rarity+ quality. Like the last coin from Aureo & Calico. That AV Mancus (31 exs. known) did not sell for 1200 E????? Last coin same type/ quality sold for 1900 E And that AV Aureus Gallienus (UNIQUE) in about UNC. did not sell at 7200 E? Yet common ones from Marcus Aurelius/ Ant. Pius/ Lucius Verus sell for 20K in same quality
Ghaznavid Gold Dinar of Sebuktekin (the founder of the Ghaznavid Dynasty) from 997: I bought it for 150 GBP + 20% buyers premium = 180 GBP, it was an unsold lot at the Baldwin's Islamic Coin Auction.
Kushan 1/4 Dinar of Huvishka (minted sometime between 151 and 192): I bought it as an unsold lot at the Feldman Auction.
I got this one from Nomisma Auction! Duci di Mantova e della Monferrato AV Quadrupla ND (4 Scudi d'oro) Mantova Mint Ferdinando Gonzaga 1612-26
This RR Gold coin is available as an unsold lot if somebody here wants it: https://www.biddr.com/auctions/aureocalico/browse?a=5657&l=6943772
